Smooth Volcano Tobacco Pipe

In addition to drawing upon the Danish school of design, Germany-based artisan Ken Dederichs combines the pipe-making styles of his home country, Japan, with his current country of residence; the result is fine smoking instruments with an eclectic yet one-of-a-kind aesthetic. This Volcano is an excellent representation of Dederichs' work, and offers a highly nuanced take on the classic shape.

Quite stout for a Volcano, the bowl stands atop a lifted, ridgeline-wrapped heel with an active, dynamic posture that fascinates the eye. A sweeping, also ridgeline-wrapped shank emerges from behind the bowl; its flat, thick shaping resembles that of an Eskimo, though it doesn't taper as much on its way to the junction. Said junction is accented with an inlaid band of brass, and it's joined by a neatly shaped, pressure-fit stem adorned with a tidy expansion ring for a pleasing sense of proportional balance. The brass inlay stands out elegantly against the stummel's smooth, glossy, chestnut finish, which highlights a gorgeous array of flame grain and birdseye that coincide precisely with briar's highly dynamic shaping. A thoughtfully executed piece all around, and well-engineered for countless satisfying smokes, this Volcano is sure to hold its own in any collection of fine pipes.
