About This Pipe
Nanna Ivarsson, a third-generation pipe maker, upholds the legacy of her father, Lars Ivarsson, and grandfather, Sixten Ivarsson, by crafting some of the world's most renowned pipes. Growing up in her grandfather's workshop and apprenticing with him in Copenhagen, Nanna developed exceptional skills in shaping, engineering, and finishing pipes from a young age, selling her first pipe at just nine years old. Widely regarded as one of the greatest living artisans, Nanna blends artistic vision with technical mastery, continuing to honor her family's tradition while pushing the boundaries of the craft.
While many of Nanna Ivarsson's pipes reflect the soft lines and gentle curves typical of Danish pipe-making, her work also carries distinct shaping cues evident of the Ivarsson family, particularly long-shanked designs like this Tomato. Both Nanna and her father Lars often favored this elongated aesthetic, pairing a rounded, bulbous bowl with a sleek, stretched shank. In profile, the bowl has a squat, compact appearance, while its broad, circular shape is more evident from above, especially in contrast to the tapered shank. The result is a pipe that feels soft and substantial in hand, while the rest of the design remains refined and streamlined. The shank features four evenly spaced bamboo knuckles, fostering a rhythmic flow, which continues smoothly through the base of the stem. Nanna skillfully oriented the grain on this piece, framing the bowl with sweeping flame grain that rises gracefully to a dense sea of birdseye framing the rim, all beneath a rich chestnut stain.
