About This Pipe

We've seen a fair few Volcano renditions from Ser Jacopo in the past, and these have taken a great many different forms, though this iteration is my favorite of these, and it is one we've yet to see from the Italian workshop. At the base, we see less breadth than I would expect from a Volcano, though there is still a good bit, with its ridgeline-wrapped outline lifting at the fore and aft, keeping the middle dipped in profile. The fore portion's lift takes on a kind of lip-shape, something especially prominent given the bowl's sweeping taper from there to the rim, while the aft's feeds into the shank, said shank taking on a consistent taper from the transition to the stem base. There's a decided slenderness about the shank itself which pushes much of the visual weight here onto the bowl, and the half-saddle orientation of the arcing stem enhances this, the entire aft of the composition kept extremely sleek. At the bowl we see that aforementioned taper to the rim, as well as a subtle forward lean that offers some nicely dynamic shaping and a bit of momentum, its tall build able to sit stably on its base. Dressing the briar here is a deep, earthy, auburn-stained sandblast that reveals blasted birdseye on either flank of the bowl, adding some pleasing texture in the hand, while the base is striated with rippling growth rings.
