About This Pipe
Upon creating his Ser Jacopo brand in 1982, Giancarlo Guidi forged his own aesthetic path, diverging even further from English and French pipemaking standards than his classically influenced northern Italian counterparts like Castello. Guidi found inspiration in fine art and everyday life, with his muses being as diverse as the pipes he saw fisherman smoking or those depicted in the art of Van Gogh. For a brand known for its whimsical style and bold, bowl-centric proportions, this is a lean and reserved rendition of the bent Pot from Ser Jacopo. The shank-and-stem arrangement is long, outstretched, and slender. This allows the transition to be placed lower on the bowl than it is in many more deeply bent Pots, which makes the bowl appear taller, narrower, and more Billiard-like. The open transition leaves plenty of room to drape a digit across, and the chamber is surprisingly capacious for a Pot. A light stain to the smooth stummel leaves gorgeous flame grain easily visible around the bowl, as well as the fine filaments of tangled birdseye whirling around the rim.
