About This Pipe

Upon creating his Ser Jacopo brand in 1982, Giancarlo Guidi forged his own aesthetic path, diverging even further from English and French pipemaking standards than his classically influenced northern Italian counterparts like Castello. Guidi found inspiration in fine art and everyday life, with his muses being as diverse as the pipes he saw fisherman smoking or those depicted in the art of Van Gogh. For a brand known for its heavily bowl-centric shaping style and large, flamboyant pipes, this Acorn from Ser Jacopo is rather reserved in shape. Organic in contour, the bowl easily evokes the appearance of its namesake tree nut. It swells out from a soft heel as fanned filaments of sandblasted flame grain guide the eye through a short flare into a girthy, high-set waist placed just below the rim. From here, the walls form a plump taper into the rim, the gentle curves of the waist yielding supplely into the rim's swollen surface. The shank-and-stem arrangement is outstretched, its lithe form subtly curved. Ser Jacopo's Jucunda sandblast and a rich red stain dress the stummel, keeping things surprisingly classic.
