About This Pipe

Inspired by the works of Danish pipe makers, Chinese artisan Yang Kun began making pipes in 2012 following a long career in the film and television makeup industry. A discerning eye for good grain, an expressive and organic carving style, and a keen eye for proportions have propelled Yang Kun to international renown.

This Volcano from Yang Kun has a bowl with a fun, forward-bent posture following the flame grain's front-swept orientation. A sharp ridgeline encircles the broad, oblong heel, throughout which crisp ocelli of sandblasted birdseye pose flamboyantly like the patterns of a peacock's feathers. Up top, the rim is smooth, offering a resistance-free surface for tobacco to glide straight into the chamber. The shank, thick in dimension, curls upward into a plump ring of boxwood at the junction. Yang Kun has done a nice job integrating the stem's shape into that of the overall composition by having the base flare at the top to create a rhythmic visual harmony with the boxwood ring. The sandblasted stummel wears a black-hued stain, which is contrasted by the boxwood accent's pale beige coloring.

As for this pipe's practical elements, the chamber's capacity is moderately capacious, making this a versatile pipe well-suited for a variety of blends and life's occasions. The shank-and-stem arrangement's outstretched posture and the softly inflated heel make for a comfortable in-hand posture and fit. Meanwhile, the angled transition offers a comfortable place to drape a digit, and the bowl's forward cant places the chamber at a convenient angle for lighting the contents within.
