Sillem's: Mayor 1814 Flake 50g Pipe Tobacco

Mayor 1814 Flake is quietly, unpretentiously good - one of those under-the-radar finds that is a gem, if you are inclined to like it. It is a straightforward, high-quality, balanced Virginia with subtle enhancements of orange and honey. Honey can be hard to isolate in a blend, and it reads somewhat like a light caramel to me, or at least a rounded sweetness. In any case, the casing is done with a light hand and only peeks out from behind a textbook Virginia, stopping short of aromatic in what I think of as "Virginia-plus" territory. I wasn't sure what to make of this at first, but then it started to kind of open up, probably want to smoke this one a little slower. Not only is it a great Virginia but with how neat the flakes are and perfect moisture out the tin this a great warm weather tobacco.

The vanilla topping is light with little depth. The Virginias are grassy, a little earthy with some citrus and a touch of dark fruit, The tobaccos have less strength and taste than the usual products. The nic-hit is mild. Burns at a reasonable rate with a consistent flavor. It won't bite, but will get slightly harsh and a little ashy at the bottom of the bowl. The Virginias are barely sweet with a touch of citrus. There's an earth note that is sublimated by the grass and hay. The nic-hit is extremely mild. The nose from the un-lit blend is a great example of what type of smoke this is going to be: fruity and sweet. I see no problem with the moisture, but, this was from a sample pouch so sealed tins may vary. It looks like it contains a fair amount of each variety of tobacco that are more like a coarse cut mixture than a broken flake. Onto the smoke: The topping pretty much steals all the limelight away from the tobacco nuances but it doesn't seem that gloopy, sticky, or sickly; its a full on aromatic but it's not too much. It burns even and gives of a fairly cool smoke. Unfortunately, it's not all good; it can bite like mad. I have to sip this gently otherwise it's horrendous! The nicotine seems light in this. I'd say it's 'very mild', that suits me but N guys would feel really let down. Another low point for me is the room note; it's like sitting in a florists! well stoved...quality is very high and the flavor add is minimal. Its a bit milder version of Dan Tobacco's Tordensjkold flake. Which is often compared to Reiner long golden flake. This is the least flavored of all those. But its maybe the best.

Much like the Sillem's Black approach here is a flake that sets it apart from the rest with a slight touch of flavor. The honey and orange combination works so well with this Virginia.
