beautifully with a toasty/yeasty note from the medium Burley. The smokiness from
the Latakia is detectable, but very minimal at this point. The Perique adds just
a bit of stewed fruit. The mocha note is insignificant in the pouch.
The Virginia flake is more finely-broken than ready-rubbed. It benefits from a little additional rubbing out, which releases more aroma from the flake.
Lighting the blend really wakes up the Latakia, which remains mild by comparison
to a "proper English," but adds a welcome dimension to the well-balanced flavor. The burley is
the stand-out contributor: it makes the smoke seem much fuller and rounder in
flavor than the typical light Latakia blend. The Perique is a supporting player.
The coffee/mocha note seems to come and go now and then, but is not a big component.
It's an interesting blend. A good choice for something a bit different now and again. Read Less

ith such large pieces. On an adventurous night I decided to light up a bowl and was more than surprised. First off, it did not burn with the same aroma as I had smelled from the bag. It was s soothing smell, with a soothing smoke, definitely not as harsh as expected. My wife said it smelled like fire wood burning. After a couple more tokes I felt the tobacco hit me pretty hard, harder than any other pipe tobacco I’ve had. In my opinion if you plan on smoking this, which I recommend, do it on a nice evening outside before bed. It pairs very well with a campfire. Maybe it’s something I ate or drank but it definitely had me sitting down the entire time while enjoying it. I would give it a whirl for the price and ignore the negative reviews. ticeable,as is the Burley adding nutty tastes..for me this has low/medium nic hit...I really like this one though..it is a blend I like a few times per month for a reminder of why I like Perique...definitely worth a try for a Perique fan.
Many weeks later now,and,yes...it is better than last experienced...with my morning coffee,this is a great start to the day...deep,rich,good nic hit...the Burley and Perique are playing great together.. still that very slight something there in concert with the obvious Perique/Burley...this is bordering on one of my favorite blends...

s. The second time I bought it from the same website it was completely disappointing. It lacked any of the smoke, spice and brine, that the latakia and perique had imparted the first time around and I was left with only the burly and Virginia which gave it no nuttiness or earthy sauce as before. However, I will not give up on this blend and plan on purchasing it again and adding more red Virginia and Perique to it. If you are looking to switch over from aromatics and want to know what Lata kia and Perique add to your smoking experience, this is definitely a great blend. Read Less

Wait for Old Gowrie. Ten time's the smoke! I wanted this one after all the good reviews to be my everyday smoke. I sure don't see in this one how anyone could give it more than 2 stars, any Rattray's blend will blow this stuff away hands down.

sn't overpower at all. The other components add their own characteristic nuance and it all wraps up nicely in something you can smoke all day and not be bored. ything other than tongue bite. What the hell are they using, cheap liquor with corn syrup?? When I received this in the mail I couldn't wait to try it. Once I got the bag open I was greeted buy the smell of just another english blend. No notes of rum, vanilla, chocolate or anything else that's been described in the reviews, just a straight up english. So ok, maybe once I let some dry a bit, maybe it's in the smoke. The charring light bit me like no other tobacco has bit me and only got worse as I struggled through it half bowl and I bowed out, couldn't finish it and I was smoking it in a Peterson Dublin filter with the filter in it!! I can't imagine how bad it would bite in a non-filtered pipe and I don't want to know. I'm gonna cellar it, forget it for a few years and see if there's any improvement, if not, into the trash it goes! Read Less

It is deep and rich, burns easy and cool, creamy and mellow, like a smooth burley perique with hints of latakia. For me it was totally amazing. If you are expecting an aromatic, it is not that, just a smooth mellow blend of the consituent elements.

break the spell. You get a little nuttiness from the burly, some brown sugar from the Virginia, some spice from the Perique, and some smoke from the Lat. The overall effect - the chord, if you will - is hazelnut mocha, although, this shifts throughout the bowl as the different notes step forward and combine and recede in turn. Towards the end of the bowl, the aroma deepens to something like a dark-chocolate-covered brandy cherry.
I’m particularly pleased with the management of the Latikia: I always *appreciate* Lats but don’t necessarily like them; here, however, there is just enough to impart a deep, chocolatey, mossy aroma, without creating the illusion that one is smoking barbecue sauce.
Mine happened to arrive at a fairly ideal moisture level and is smoking very smooth and dry, though I suspect it would be even a bit better if I took the trouble to rub out the bits of flake. Read Less

in a moderate volume and keep it well mixed. It ages extremely well, and personally I've enjoyed it after around a 6 month stint in a jar in my tobacco box. Also a fair warning, don't let the "raw" smell throw you off! It smokes quite nicely. Read Less
