Burley, I'm not sure. The trifecta of Latakia, Perique, and Orientals are truly something special. If you search YouTube for "Byzantium pipe tobacco", a Jeremy Reeves video pops up and beautifully explains why this blend is so unique.
For the money, I haven't yet discovered anything I'd rather smoke. I'm glad I bought 4oz of this stuff "blind", basing my decision purely on reviews and my own understanding of my personal tastes. I'm reaching past J.M. Boswell's Northwoods and Military Force, C&D Pirate Kake, Samuel Gawith Navy Flake, Nutty Irishman, Autumn Evening, Mocha, Pasha's Dream, PS Optimum, PS Nougat, Super Balkan, PS306, and an unopened tin of Sun Bear Bourbon Cask to smoke Byzantium, for reference.
If you like strong flavors like black coffee, chai tea, stone ground mustard, garlic, hot sauce, truffle, smokey BBQ sauce, sauerkraut, you'll probably appreciate this blend. Now I'm not saying it tastes like any of these things, I'm just using them to illustrate a "taste preference profile". I hope this helps someone. If in doubt, just order an ounce to try. You won't miss the $5, I promise....Read More

I have not smoked this yet, only opened the tin to place in a jar. I’m from the Deep South in Alabama and primarily a cigar smoker. The nose on this smells like a hickory BBQ pit and I like it. I will report back and adjust my rating after a bowl or two on the back porch.

visible I can barely find the Perique just by looking, but gosh darn Jeremy and Co have hit on some sort of magical alchemy here with the ratios and the results are all kinds of interesting. All the usual notes of Latakia are here -incense, light camphor, oud, some sort of weirdly esoteric animalic funk, a touch of something like coffee, a stronger touch of something like medicinal mushrooms (reishi always comes to mind for some reason), and just a kiss of sweetness I can never quite define‐ but they're accented with subtle pushes and nudges that take it in unexpected directions. There's something bready and slightly grain-like along with a distinct and very pleasantly pallet-cleansing crispness (I presume from the Orientals) that elevates the aforementioned Lat notes to new level, along with unpredictable bursts of fruity, perfumesque strangeness that I assume is the Perique. Its complex yet approachable, unpredictable but weirdly dependable at the same time, and always, always interesting. Altogether lovely, in other words, and it's become one of my regulars. Aaaaand, just to make it even more delightful, it pairs beautifully with strong, fruity red wine; think Shiraz, Pinot Nior, Chianti, and strong table blends. (And probably Port, though I have yet tontrybit...) The acid and fruit notes of the wine dance with the smoky, musky perfume of the Byzantium, swirling together into something infinitely stranger and more alluring than either alone. The perfect companion for flights of the imagination to exotic lands indeed, and I can't recommend it highly enough......Read More

Sampled in a Missouri Pride.
This is a damn good Balkan. Immediately upon lighting it up you get a nice kick in the nuts from the Latakia telling you “hey I’m here and I run the show”.
Then the spicy Oriental and Perique go on to just beautifully pack the bowl with flavor giving you a very lush and luxurious Balkan experience.
I knew from the jump that this was going to be a five star blend and likely to see a lot of future action for me.
I actually enjoyed several bowls of this blend and can tell you that it paired nicely with a couple of red wines like The Prisoner and Meomi Pinot Noir.
It’s sweet and deep and has those nice nasal warming aromas that remind me of how wasabi kind of clears your sinuses in a flash of heat and then turn sweet on your taste buds. This blend literally made me salivate as I was smoking it.
Although I’m not saying there are anything of the same composition, this blend will easily replace White Horse as one of my go to Balkans as my supply of that blend runs out over time due to it’s no longer being produced.
If you’re a Balkan fan and you haven’t tried it I would recommend you give it a shot.
