I bet you know this flavor already.

Product: Cornell & Diehl Izmir Turkish Bulk
So many blends simply list "orientals" as an ingredient, but there are so many different varieties it's hard to know what flavor a blend will have. To make matters worse, they aren't all available straight for blending to familiarize our palates wit... Read More
h. But luckily C&D has this little gem, so I finally bought some Izmir to try not knowing what it would be like. Even after I opened the can I couldn't recognize the smell. It's a rather shaggy cut that likes to clump together, but was a perfect moisture level... the only words I can think of to describe the aroma is "buttery", maybe "nutty". Long story made short: once I got a nice bowl going and settled into a good rhythm I felt in a familiar place. I thought "I know this flavor!". Not only did I know it, but it's one I enjoy. If you enjoy rich English tobaccos, I'll bet you know Izmir's profile too. Reviews of taste can be so subjective, but it's a recognizable flavor in many well known English/Balkan blends I gravitate to. As for using it to blend your own, it should lend a creamy sour edge to blends, more musty than perfumy, and sweeter than spicy. It has characteristics of milder Perique blends and similar to Burley in it's creamy fullness, but also a sweetness I think would partner well with Virginias. But, I think I like it straight, just like this. Read Less

Although I have had this tobacco in a blend, I wanted to try this straight to experience it. At first I was surprised with the nutty flavor, then sweetness, spice and something else. I couldn't put my finger on it, then it hit me. Corn silk. Now you... Read More
young whippersnappers don't know the flavor of a good Virginia with a little sweet corn silk. Too bad for you. The flavors lingered on my palette for some time. Mix this with your blend, sure. But try it straight, it's outstanding.
FYI...this tobacco is like the Perique of sweetness...I've tried a few blends with various degrees of Izmir...if you go to 10% it completely takes over the flavor...use it like Perique...3-5% and it gives a great back flavor and blends well with other tobaccos. Read Less
Exotic; Akin to Milk Oolong Tea and Hay
June 19, 2021
Product: Cornell & Diehl Izmir Turkish Bulk
This is NOT a mediocre leaf, and it's an absolute pleasure to smoke, and one of only a few to be smoked neat. It possesses a silky/creamy mouthfeel, while the taste encompassed in that creaminess consists of a buttery verdant sweetness, with just a ... Read More
touch of woodiness... akin to Milk Oolong tea and hay. I expected more sourness, but received none. I detect the slightest bit of spice, but no sharpness, At times, it goes right to the edge but never gets sharp. The room note is light; verdant and slightly woody. Nicotine is a bit stronger than expected, but then I'm smoking this on an empty stomach, and so I'll place this at 2.5 out of 5. Read Less

I'll lead with the fact that I'm hugely surprised by Izmir and thoroughly enjoy it. Its a very flavorful yet manageable solo smoke in a loosely packed bowl. It has a nutty, almond sweetness and walnutty sharpness in parallel with a tea like woody,

mami, savory note. Though there's sweetness, its rounded and balanced by a subtle sour tartness. A floralness in the first half of the bowl is replaced by cocoa and spice in the second half. Its cool and full. Its very consistent in the flavor profile but the number of different tasting notes provides an enjoyable complexity for me personally. Honestly it's surprising how many different notes present in each bowl from this single tobacco varietal. I find it more complex and enjoyable than my favorite Virginias.
One light with No bite! Keep in mind too, Oriental has the lowest amount of problematic chemicals so in relative terms its "healthy". My hat is off! Read Less
What a great surprise

I was used to percive orientals as spicy, a bit sour, with a metallic taste. Actually this is true only when combined to virginias or other tobaccos. This one tastes a little like smoked wood, like a faint latakia, and it has sweetness. Sometimes it ... Read More
reminds me of the cigarette taste, but so much better. It burns beautiful to the end, leaving a nice ash, no tongue bites, no harsh spots. Goes perfectly with coffee. Stays in my rotation.
It blends very well with other tobaccos, but I think that there are allready lots of good oriental mixes on the market so i rather smoke it like that. Read Less

I'm reviewing the bulk. It came very dry, which had me worried. But when I sampled it, I realized it was not a problem, it's just lacking any added casing for obvious blending purposes. It's pure. By itself, wow: It packs well and smokes easy, maybe ... Read More
a single ash dump and relight will be needed, but maybe not. The flavor is complex. It has a sour quality that reminds me of the aftertaste of a quality bourbon---none of the burn, just that sour goodness but with only hints of sweet way in the background. It can also produce some floral qualities, like bare hints of a rose way back there somewhere. Sometimes the slightest spice, sometimes just a bit of rich woodsiness (is that a word?). All that is going on, but it's not overbearing. Nic is minimal. When I first opened that bulk bag and saw something that looked like dry red Virginia and smelled ever so faintly of sour apples (but it hardly even had a tin or bag note at all), I was a bit disappointed. To my joyful surprise, this stuff is so good, so lightly pungent, so complex, and so easy to smoke all on its own. I originally got this to improve other blends, but I foresee smoking it pure just as much as I blend it.
EDIT: A touch of this makes many smokes better, even smokes I like such as Gaslight, Newminster Danish Gold, coin smokes, etc. Read Less

If you enjoy Oriental style tobaccos, you owe it to yourself to enjoy this one on its own. Smooth, buttery, semi-sweet, and faintly smoky-sour. Lots to savor in this one. Light and satisfying, a great option for your rotation or cellar.

o at the bottom! I'm thinking I must've packed it a bit too tight, something I'll learn from in later bowls. What a first impression though! It's deliciously sweet and, some fruity I feel? Like figs but with a fruit that's not plums I'd say. A kind of deep, dark, rich flavour. I couldn't get it to bite even though I was puffing a bit hard and fast, my having to do so another sign I packed it too tight. The cut is surprisingly long ribbons, making it a bit hard to get into the smaller bowl, and I'll certainly be trying differently sized bowls. I retrohaled a lot more than normal with this one as it was such a gentle smoke, barely stinging my rather sensitive sinuses. Perhaps because of that it left a bit of an odd feeling on the back of throat and tongue. I certainly hope I'm not somehow allergic to this tobacco, as I love its scent and flavour so much. Overall, while I'll experiment with this one in blends, especially interested in how it'll compliment a burely, I'll also be smoking straight a good bit too. Highly recommend it. Read Less
