Captain Earle's: Ten Russians 8oz Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-463-0012

Captain James Earle first took to sea at age 12, embarking on a life-long passion that saw him ascend to the rank of Master of the Charles W. Morgan, the last of the wooden whaling ships, currently docked in Mystic, Connecticut. Manufactured by Cornell & Diehl, Captain Earle's pipe tobaccos pay tribute to his legacy, each blend in the series alluding to an important time in his life.

Ten Russians is a true delight for lovers of Latakia, and it's inspired by the true story of Captain Earle's rescue of ten Russians marooned in a sampan in the Sea of Japan. Rich and full-bodied, Ten Russians is a pressed crumble cake of Latakia, Orientals, and Virginias, delivering a perfectly balanced blend for the true aficionado of full English mixtures.

Product: Captain Earle's Ten Russians 8oz
I used to smoke Balkan Sabrani back in the early '70s when Syria could contribute her Latakia and last year started thursting for the old mix. This is the closest I've found to date. I gave up the smoking habit for forty yrs+. Wife and peers disapproved of it then, but now I don.t really care!...Read More
Ties with Casbah
August 02, 2023
Product: Captain Earle's Ten Russians 8oz
Like Casbah but with a lot less of the fake boozy top note they pour all over that stuff. The exact same top note is used here, just a lot less of it. Same orientals here, just a slightly smaller proportion. Different ratio of Virginias here, and a bit more latakia. It's fascinating what will happen with just the smallest tweaks to the recipe. Ten Russians is very good, I have almost a pound in the cellar and I will grab another pound for later. The thing that disappoints me however is that all these "separate" companies are all really the same company. Laudisi (i.e., Smokingpipes) owns and/or controls most of the big ones: C&D, G.L. Pease, Two Friends, Captain Earle's, Castello, Briar Works are all sub labels of the same conglomerate company, and even Sutliff/Mac Baren are subsidiaries or affiliated partners. There are companies which have been around for hundreds of years and, hence, are much older than Laudisi and not outright owned by them, such as the two Gawith companies and Peterson just to name three, but Laudisi still maintains monopolistic distribution agreements with most of them. Consequently, all these companies source from the same farms, the same tobaccos, and use the same four master blenders, so they all taste the same. And this makes sense because they simply are exactly the same. There is no choice, only the illusion of choice. You like Captain Earle better than Drucquer & Sons? Wrong, they're exactly the same. Same tobaccos from the same farms blended by the same blend masters. I spend about a thousand dollars a month here, so obviously it's not that bad, but the whole illusion of choice thing is very frustrating. Of course I'll keep buying, keep consuming product like a good little piggy, but I will also keep wishing there were more genuine variety and competition. 4.5 stars because the blend is nice and they used less of the sugary chemical topping....Read More

Product: Captain Earle's Ten Russians 2oz
About forty years ago, Nat Sherman had about twenty varieties of pipe tobacco, one of which was a strong Latakia blend. I eventually ran out and Nat Sherman stopped selling pipe tobacco. I have been searching for something as enjoyable for years; lots of close calls, but I've finally found it!...Read More
Great Blend

Product: Captain Earle's Ten Russians 2oz
As with all C.E. Blends it’s great flavor while this is very heavy in Latakia it is a wonderful blend on those days where your taster is not working so well this blend has flavor to spare and comes through well keep a few in the cellar for those dark days
awesome!

Product: Captain Earle's Ten Russians 8oz
Tin note of pungent sour smoky and tart fruit. Tobacco is a brown, dark brown and black marbled Krumble Kake. Moisture content is great. Kake breaks apart and rubs out with a little effort. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is medium to strong and nic is medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and very consistent, with notes of floral, smoky, herbal, spices, wood, leather, incense, musty vegetation, savory, dry, tangy, citrus peel/zest, fermented sour, ripe sweet fruit, bready, mildly bitter, a sweet grassy background note, and a peppery retro. Latakia is leading with Virginias and Oriental/Turkish supporting. Cavendish is cheering from the cheap seats. Room note is tolerable to strong, and aftertaste is great....Read More
Just like Penzance

For some reason this blend reminds alot of Esoterica Penzance. I keep plenty on hand and enjoy it often
great blend

Product: Captain Earle's Ten Russians 2oz
The mix of sweet and strong work well in this blend to give a lot of flavor with no bite which is a nice perk of latakia blends.
Not too heavy on the tongue, a bit of spice and pepper late in the bowl.
power is a tic under medium even in my large bowls.
The Captain Earles series is another
good offering from C&D and any of the blends are worth trying with Ten Russians being a bit sweeter with a rich smooth foundation.
Recommend to all Enthusiasts and newcomers looking for a sweet and strong blend with a lot of charm.
I wonder how well this pairs with a nice whiskey?

Update.....10/2024
Jarred the crumble plugs April 2023. I just now have rubbed out the plugs and re-jar for another year or so.(10/2024)
I always have a sample to see how the age is changing the blend.
I find a good amount of fruit flavor has grown along with a nice nut and smooth pepper in the nose. A bit of sting lingers on the edges.
The fresh blend had a wide profile moving from sweet to tangy to dark and had some rough edges but the aged version is showing a lot of promise to be flavorful and smooth.
I could stop now and enjoy the blend but another year should bring out the best.
Fluffing from plug to loose pack in a jar will help a lot as well.
I suggest picking up some!
