About This Pipe Tobacco

Founded in Kendal, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. has fashioned quality pipe tobacco since 1887, utilizing processes and techniques that date to 1792. The Cumbria-based company prioritizes natural tobacco flavor, and in many of their mixtures, Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. maintains the standards enforced by the United Kingdom's strict purity laws of the 19th and 20th centuries — such laws dictating how much and what type of flavorings could be added to pipe tobacco and ensuring that sub-quality leaf wasn't hidden under the veil of exorbitant toppings.

A medium-strength, classic flake built on a base of bright Virginias, with some Burley added for a well-rounded blend with subtle sweetness.

A lite version of Dark Flake Unscented. Not quite as powerful, a bit subdued to suit the all-day smoker. Superb.

A True Pipe Smoker’s Blend: Bold, Pure, and Unforgettable

Product: Gawith Hoggarth & Co. Brown Flake Unscented Bulk

As a seasoned pipe smoker, I can confidently say this is pure tobacco executed to perfection—a true blend for pipe smokers, not candy smokers. This medium-bodied flake is a masterpiece, devoid of any heavy toppings or casings. While there’s a distinct floral note present, it’s just a very subtle touch of the Lakeland essence—far from the infamous strength that often divides opinions. I attribute this delicate aroma to the white Malawi Burley used in the blend, likely toasted and paired with dark-fired Burley for a harmonious balance. The blending notes confirm the use of Malawi Burley, reinforcing that the floral undertone is a natural characteristic of the tobacco itself. This is a man’s tobacco—rich, bold, and straightforward. I’ve smoked this in several pipes, and unlike blends with stronger Lakeland toppings, which are notorious for ghosting, this one leaves little to no lingering trace—at most, a subtle presence after about three bowls in a single pipe. A truly remarkable blend for the discerning smoker....Read More

I would call myself a seasoned pipe smoker so I have had some crappy tobacco and some that flicks that eureka moment and this is one just some amazing looking flakes and when they get some age it's even better the plume they get on them is gorgeous. The taste to me is like coco part way through the bole it's like a good Virginia taste at first then molds into that dark fired taste and then takes on the coco like note. I like it on its own occasionally il mix a little bit of G&H dark plug with it and OMG it's just mouth watering goodness. I have both scented and unscented the Lakeland grows on you after a while but I always find myself ordering 3 time more of the unscented than the other....Read More

No nonsense, Virginia and burley. Hits the right spots. No Lakeland essence. Cool, satisfying, it’s not an over N tobacco. Savory, sweet, hay like, and his the right spots.

This flake as always comes wet but 30 minutes dry time and you have an excellent smoke like HH Burley Flake with Gawith flare. I would smoke this all day everyday and be happy if it just came dryer and you didn’t spend 1/4 of you money on water.
