If you are hesitant about getting into pure VA, try this first.

This is an easy smoke that gives you the Virginia experience before you've developed the packing and cadence pure Virginias require. I would recommend it to any beginners or people who have smoked mostly burley-based blends. The flavor is quite similar to Capstan Blue-- not wildly different, in my opinion. It's just a whole lot easier to smoke without collapsing the flavor or burning your mouth. Also great for blending, if you like making your own blends.
I don't typically drink alcohol while smoking, however: If you drink a good Campbeltown Scotch with this, the whisky lends complexity, and the blend lends its sweetness to the overall experience.

So I'm giving this an overall score of 4 out of 5 stars, for general use. For someone well-acquainted with the best, aged pure Virginia leaf, this will be boring and a little bland. But if you're a beginner, nervous about getting into Virginias (or been burned in the past), or wanting a simple, sweet tobacco blend that adds to and does not distract from the enjoyment of a fine whisky, Winchester rates 5 out of 5 stars for those specific use cases.

A modern elegant codger blend!!

Such a great anytime/all day blend! It can be smoked when being contemplative or when doing other tasks. When contemplating, I get alternating flavors of dark fruit, chocolate chip oatmeal cookie, almond, sweet earth, and some slight floral notes. The red Virginia and burley/Cavendish play so seamlessly well together. If I had to compare, I would say this is smoother, sweeter, and lacking the random sour notes of Pegasus (which I still love). Worthy of purchase by the pound, without a doubt!! C&D has truly updated the codger blend with a natural beauty that doesn't need any of the old school toppings!!!!!...Read More

It's nice to find something that is plain but in a good way. Kind of like eating a bowl of Corn Flakes. Sometimes you just want something comforting and not complex, smokey, zesty, overly sweet, spicy, etc. Winchester has no goop, no flavorings, no exotic complex components. It's just a straight up enjoyable comfort blend....Read More
I’m surprised

I am very surprised that this tobacco isn’t talked about more. I recently purchased 4 ounces of this because of the description on this tobacco. I was smoking sutliff ready rubbed, the edgeworth match. But I bought 8 ounces of SRR and it was totally disgusting. I threw almost all of it away. I don’t know if it was just the bottom of the barrel or not but I’m not one to go back if I get burned on something. Anyway, I tried this Winchester and it is phenomenal. It is now my new all day. It reminds me a little of five brothers. This is not too sweet and not too bitter or bland. It’s just right. The smoothness is amazing. It’s surprising how smooth it is because of the Virginia in it. The room not does remind me of that old timey pipe tobacco. Great room note. The nic hit is spot on too. I dip Copenhagen and smoke a pipe. When I get done smoking this stuff I won’t dip for a long while. This tobacco is best sipped to taste that quality tasty tobacco. If you’re a codger taste kind of guy it’s a good one to have around. It’s no edgeworth match but it’s just as good if not better. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed. Cheers my friends!!!...Read More
An Old West Masterpiece!

Every now and then, on rare occasion, you find a blend that you know you're going to like from the moment you smell it. After getting a couple ounces of Winchester in the mail I stashed it away in a Ball jar, let it sit and build it's aroma for a week and a half, then cracked open the jar and gave it a sniff. Dry dusty prairie grass, gunpowder, and horse. That's what Winchester smells like, and I think it was quite appropriately named! It comes a bit wetter than any non-aromatic C&D blend I've tried before, but takes the flame easily and burns quite well with no dry time required. In terms of flavor it's a very mellow and mild blend (especially by C&D standards), with the dark, earthy red Virginias and unsweetened canvendished burley in harmonious balance. A little soil, a little leaf litter, a subtle nuttiness, and an occasional ephemeral hint of cocoa. It reminds me a lot of G.L. Pease Union Square, but much smoother on account of the cavendished burley softening the rough throat irritating edges of the red Virginias and with a gentle burley flavor as the background note instead of grassy bright Virginia. There's still a sharp zing on the retrohale though, letting you know that you're most definitely smoking a red Virginia blend. Speaking of notes, the room note is very old time'y! I'm not sure how else to describe it other than that it reminds me of an old west saloon. Dusty and woody with cedar spice, and a roasty quality like a woodfire hearth. It's very pleasant and makes you think of times long gone by. As I get towards the end of the pipe the nicotine content feels just a tiny bit below medium to me, and it seems like something most folks could smoke all day if they wanted with little breaks in-between. All in all it's a really pleasant, mild tasting, dark and earthy blend that seems like a good Virginia blend for burley fans, or a gateway into burleys for Virginia smokers. If you like Union Square then Winchester will be right up your alley. It's also the most "old west" smelling blend of anything I've ever smoked when it comes to both the tin note and room note, so if you're looking for something that feels like what frontiersman might have smoked in the 1700 or 1800s then absolutely give Cornell & Diehl's Winchester a try! It's a keeper in my book, and easily my favorite red Virginia blend I've ever tried right from the first smoke....Read More
