Drucquer & Sons: First Amendment 100g Pipe Tobacco

Product Number: 003-756-0015

Founded in 1841, Drucquer & Sons was a famed London tobacco shop that relocated to Berkeley, California, in 1928. The shop was more than just a tobacconist though; it was a community. It was where some of the greatest tobacco-blenders in recent memory — like Carl Ehwa of McClelland and Gregory Pease of G.L. Pease — first plunged their hands into fragrant tobacco. The historic shop may be gone, but its rich history and brand of pipe tobaccos continues, reformulated from their original recipes by Gregory Pease (and made by Cornell & Diehl) for the modern smoker.

The First Amendment to the Drucquer catalog in 40 years, this blend celebrates the collective right to free expression with an enduring formula of Red and Bright Virginia tobaccos and fine air-cured leaf, seasoned with Cypriot Latakia and Louisiana Perique, then pressed and aged in cakes and sliced. First Amendment is rich and satisfying, with notes of dark chocolate, malty Assam tea, black walnut, hints of a deep, earthy sweetness, and a complexity whose nuances are as endless as those of our time-tested and essential freedoms.

I'm obviously in the minority here, but this is awful. I've had it open for 6 months or more so that I come back to it from time to time and see if it changes for me, as many tobaccos taste different at different times - even tobaccos I love taste not so great sometimes. This one does nothing but burn, burn, burn my tongue. Tin note is nice, but the smoke is a big NO....Read More

A well balanced flake, a little nutty flavors, Latakia and Perique are there with the subtle flavors.
An Enhanced Virginia Blend

Product: Drucquer & Sons First Amendment 100g
An English blend in the sense that it follows the English purity standards. It does not contain anywhere near a substantial quantity of Latakia and there are no other Orientals--but that's not to say that they're necessary, only missing. First Amendment is a blend driven from the Virginia and Burley mix and they are pretty well-melded (Sometimes C&D sourced Virginias act more like Burleys and their Burleys act more like Virginias.) But In its all-together this blend is pretty rich and a little earthy. I think that the other tobaccos perform more as flavor enhancers. The Perique appears more in the latter half of the bowl adding a bit of pepper, the Latakia adds just a wisp of aroma in the side-stream smoke and only a hint of taste. The presentation is a flake broken lengthwise and it has in all likelihood been steamed and pressed--the color is mostly a very dark brown. This is a worthwhile blend that I smoke whenever I want a heavier taste, so it's only occasional smoke for me. Slow-burning, cool, and dry. Not all blends benefit from a little extra aging, but this one does. My tin has about an extra year on it. It's smokable right out of the tin (after some air exposure and about a week of just sitting), but the extra time improves the blend....Read More

G.L.P blew this one out of the water. This tobacco is warm and inviting, like a stone hearth around a roaring fireplace. Broken flakes at perfect moisture, fill and pack nicely. Dark chocolate and campfire greet your palet. Behaves well down to small dottle. Slow cool smoke. I feel like I could take on the World, and I just might!...Read More

I finally worked through enough of my jarred tobaccos to open a new tin so I decided it was time to try this blend. I find it to be a bit more satisfying and creamy than Blairgowrie and it is a bit sweeter than Inns of Court. Smooth, flavorful, with a nice power level at the end of a bowl. The burly is good and gives the blend a nice foundation to work from. The broken flakes were at a good moisture content right out of the tin and I have great success with the fold and stuff method. I found no bite and the flavors last to the end of the bowl. Recommend to all Enthusiasts and newcomers who are comfortable with a slightly more powerful blend with lots of flavor....Read More
Change of pace

Product: Drucquer & Sons First Amendment 100g
Great moisture level from tin, easily rubbed flakelets. Warm and sweet Virginias muscle in on the Latakia and comes in the flavor door first. Bitter chocolatey, nutty, a little sour, a bit more vinegary than citrusy. Smokes very comfortably, didn’t tire my palette after an hour and a half in a Morta, with just a couple of relights. Probably not an all day smoke for me, but a nice change of pace that I look foreward to enjoying again....Read More
awesome!

Freshly opened 15-month-old tin, has notes of sour, smoky, and tart sweet. Tobacco Broken Flake are mostly brown and dark brown with a little tan and black. Moisture content is good to go, and larger flakes pieces rub out with a little effort. No drying needed. Burns slow with a few relights. The strength is medium to strong and nic is medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is medium to full and fairly consistent, with complex notes of floral, toast, sweet, mildly smoky, spice, wood, tangy dark fruit, vegetation, mildly herbal, lemon grass, sour, very dry, leathery, quite spicy, nuts, a tart orange peel/zest background note, and a peppery retro. Virginia has a small lead on Perique, with Burley supporting. Latakia is mildly supporting. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is awesome....Read More

First Amendment Pipe Tobacco

Product: Drucquer & Sons First Amendment 100g
I really enjoyed this tobacco. It had great tobacco flavor. It's nice smooth smoke. I loaded it right from the tin and into my 40 year old free style meerschaum. You can smoke it puffing fast or slow, whatever your smoking pace is. No bite, left white ash at the bottom of the bowl when I was finished with my smoke. I will buy some more tins to cellar....Read More
Smooth and Rich

It's difficult to grade anything Greg Pease puts out at under 3 stars. Darn near everything he/C&D releases exhibits the finest in the market. The presentation was nicely stacked, loosely-pressed cut flakes of perfect moisture. Burley is decidedly American and substituting that for Orientals reduces the complexity of flavor a little, but it also introduces a smooth, earthy, toasted grain and tannic black walnut flavor which enhances the other components. There's a rustic quality to this mixture that denotes a purity with very few, if any, additives. Yet there also exists an extremely refined and deliberate effort to convey a harmonious taste experience. The Red Virginia is most pronounced and has the marked bready/pastry flavor with little sweetness, and that compliments the burley very well. The cavendish in conjunction with burley and Red VA yield a very mellow and soft effect - tempering the earthiness of the burley. The latakia is added in smaller proportions and exhibits only the slightest smoky/campfire note in the background. This room note and 'taste of the smell', reminds me of an old book. I really like mixtures with a light hand on latakia - unless it's a really sweet mixture like say, Star of the East. The perique is light too, and doesn't exhibit a prominent spicy-black pepper nuance, but rather a tanginess. The nicotine in this is actually pretty stout; 3 to 3.5 out of 5. I'm not sure why the strength was listed at 2 as you will definitely feel the nicotine....Read More
