So typically I don't smoke aromatics. This is the best tin note on any aro I have ever smelled. From what I can tell, the room note is very much like the tin note too. This is a great tobacco with a good heavy, almost dark fruity Virginia flavour up... Read More
front. There's a very faint spicy nuttiness to it, which I assume is from the Turkish. The finish is very similar to the taste of a wild flower honey which is probably a mixture of the Virginia's and the maple topping, which is what I liked the most about the blend. The rum is just enough to give it a slight boozy taste near the end. This is a very, very slow sipper because of the amount of steam it produces. It came in deceivingly dry but can soak your pipe pretty fast if you aren't careful. That isn't why I gave it a 4. It would be a 5 if I enjoyed aros more that's all. All in all it is fantastic though. Read Less

Im more of a Balkan/English man but this does well for those rare cravings of sweet the rum and maple pair nicely and the Virginias and Turkish hold up well as the base certainly worth giving a shot if you are on the edge about it.
Quite A Surpise!

I too am not an Aromatic fan, and because of this I avoided this blend, and White Lightning as well. I own and enjoy all of the other Appalachian series blends. But as soon as you start describing Maple or Raspberry and Vanilla, I'm generally not i... Read More
nterested. Boy was I wrong! These two blends are NOT Aromatics. They are Virginia blends that have the lightest touch of aromatic flavors that gently enhance the overall taste. The tin note is comforting and delicious. I'm not one to try describing specific flavors, but all I can say is that I love this wonderful blend. I can't wait to buy several more tins. If you're like me and hesitate to try blends that sound aromatic, please try this one and Whit Lightning ASAP!! Read Less

Initially I've been left unimpressed by String Duster, but the more I smoke it, the more I like it. Opening the tin, one is greeted by broken flakes of predominantly bright orange/yellow with some darker brown bits in the mix. I found it hard to fill... Read More
and light my pipe with this, so I chopped it in my coffee grinder (just enough to essentially break the flake apart completely, as one would do by rubbing it out, which makes it much easier to manage). I find the tin note quite pleasant: A familiar aroma that I just couldn't identify (not the traditional rum & maple aroma that I'm familiar with), until a colleague suggested rum and raisin; that is the closest I can come in describing it. In its chopped/rubbed out form, the tobacco lights easily, and if you're really into that thing of having to smoke a full bowl in a single session, you'll find that very few relights are necessary. This tobacco is of medium strength but very flavorful. I particularly like the fact that it may be classified as an aromatic, but without the excessive sweetness, moisture, and lack of tobacco strength that I normally find in those mixtures; for someone partial to the more neutral English-type blends, this is an excellent aromatic variation and a treat. My main reason for not giving String Duster a full 5-star rating is that I have recently discovered the Gawith & Hogarth twists, which have become my yardstick for judging any tobacco - and this one, good as it is, is not quite up there.
