About This Pipe Tobacco

Founded in 1841, Drucquer & Sons was a famed London tobacco shop that relocated to Berkeley, California, in 1928. The shop was more than just a tobacconist though; it was a community. It was where some of the greatest tobacco-blenders in recent memory — like Charl Ehwa of McClelland and Gregory Pease of G.L. Pease — first plunged their hands into flagrant tobacco. The historic shop may be gone, but its rich history and brand of pipe tobaccos continues, reformulated from their original recipes by Gregory Pease (and made by Cornell & Diehl) for the modern smoker.

For many decades, Inns of Court was one of Drucquer's most popular blends, and it was even known to have comforted members of Admiral Richard Byrd's crew during their second Antarctic expedition. This finely balanced mixture of Virginia tobaccos, White and Brown Burleys, and just a bit of Latakia and Perique keeps Inns of Court in high regard among aficionados of English blends, offering a complex, nutty taste and wonderful, nostalgic aroma that is sure to suit many palates.

A burley lovers English blend to savor

Product: Drucquer & Sons Inns of Court 100g
This is a most comforting smoke! Inns of Court really opened my eyes to what burley can do when incorporated into an English blend. Upon initial lighting, the nutty burleys take the lead, with the orientals and virginias giving support with sweet and sour notes and Latakia giving a pleasant smoky backdrop. As the bowl progresses, the orientals start to ramp up more, slightly more than the sweet nuttiness of the burleys. The Latakia is still in the background supporting with delicious smokiness. All around this blend is simply wonderful. I will be discovering more from Mr Pease’s Drucquer & Son’s!...Read More

This is my home base tobacco, the core of my rotation. I smoke more of this than any other tobacco and always keep some around. It is not the strongest or the most complex I smoke regularly but its the one I always come back to after a hard day or when I just want comfort. It delivers loads of nutty richness from the burley, has good body, perfect nicotine and the Latakia is in the background and provides a bit of interest instead of dominating the taste. Its right in the sweet spot for me....Read More
Dry English Like Champagne

Up to this point in my pipe smoking journey, I've come across 2 basic types of perique notes: raisins/stewed fruits and blue cheese. This blend employs the latter . The tin note is pungent. The flavor is complex and decent. I was expecting the black Cavendish to sweeten up the smoke, but it does not. The flavor is dry like champagne or wine. I don't enjoy the perique note in this one. It isn't bad... I just don't prefer it. I added just a bit of sweet black Cavendish and it seems to have toned down the perique flavor and strength. I'm glad to have tried it. To me this tastes like three friars with Latakia....Read More
Great Tasting Blend

If it was good enough for Byrd to carry to the Antarctic I think it's certainly good enough for most everybody else. It provides a smooth and rich all-tobacco flavor. This is a blend that will please lots of folks and offend almost no one. It's all about the great balance in the Burley and Virginia mix--exceedingly well-proportioned with the nuttiness of the Burleys a bit in the lead position. There's just enough Latakia to detect in both the flavor and the smoke aroma to qualify this as an "English", but the Latakia is subdued. The Perique is also held in reserve making only an occasional appearance in the flavor. 3-4 out of 10 for strength and a 4-5 out of 10 for flavor. Absolutely no detractors whatsoever and extremely worthwhile! It's not quite a 5 out of 5--4.75 overall. I strongly advise that you give a freshly opened tin some time to breathe. Like a fine wine, air brings out the flavor....Read More

Tin note of tart Rasins, sour sweet, and mild smoky. Tobacco is a Ribbon cut of a yellowish tan and brown with a few bits of black. Moisture content is great. Burns moderate with few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild to medium. No flavoring detected. Taste is mild to medium and very consistent, with notes of fermented vegetation, very woody, molasses, Rasin, cocoa, very earthy, brown sugar, leather, spices, bread, floral, savory, sweet grass, tangy citrus, acidic/spicy, a sweet nutty background note, and a moderately peppery retro. Burley is leading with Virginia, Cavendish and Perique supporting. Latakia is supporting from the cheap seats. Room note is pleasant, and aftertaste is good....Read More
