About This Pipe Tobacco

Founded in 1841, Drucquer & Sons was a famed London tobacco shop that relocated to Berkeley, California, in 1928. The shop was more than just a tobacconist though; it was a community. It was where some of the greatest tobacco-blenders in recent memory — like Carl Ehwa of McClelland and Gregory Pease of G.L. Pease — first plunged their hands into fragrant tobacco. The historic shop may be gone, but its rich history and brand of pipe tobaccos continues, reformulated from their original recipes by Gregory Pease (and made by Cornell & Diehl) for the modern smoker.

An English-style flake mixture, the Merry Monk is composed of Red and Bright Virginias seasoned with Cypriot Latakia, piquant St. James Perique, White Burley, and Black Cavendish. Once blended, the mixture is pressed and aged in cakes before being cut into flakes, marrying the flavor-enhancing benefits of the pressing process with the convenience of a sliced flake. As a blend, this mixture is a medium-to-full-bodied smoke that offers a tangy sweetness accented with notes of woodsmoke, cream, and nuts.

A nice full bodied blend that is sweet and smoky. It has little hints of a spicy character mixed in and the Burley adds a nice nutty note to the blend. I said in a review of another English blend, that I just love English blends that incorporate Burley into them. It adds so much to the smoke and I think it really mellow it out a lot also, making it a smooth, no bite blend....Read More

I haven't written a review after only 1 bowl (actually in the midst of the first bowl as I write) of a "new-to-me" blend, but I had to write this first-impression review.

First, the canister art (I know - don't judge a blend by the artwork) but this is well done. It harkens back to past eras
- and harkens well indeed. I love the little "story" on the tin art too!

The tin note is best described as nostalgia in a can. I'm trying this in the midst of Christmas-tide. Think the perfect Christmas cake with a good plum wine nearby with a lovely fire in the fireplace. As one reviewer notes it says everything from Happy Christmas to Merry Yuletide all at once.

Preparing the flakes was a joy - nice thick flakes that are ready to be formed as you wish.

Once packed, it took the flame beautifully and hasn't required many re-lights. Copious billows of lazy smoke arrive, and you are ready to slow down and enjoy the tales of the Merry Monk.

This particular tin had almost a year of age. This is quickly moving into my top 3 blends.

And outstanding English in a very crowded room of English blends: I'm a loyal member of the "Brothers of the Pipe" for sure (see tin art).

This is not your grandpa's English. I wondered if the world needed another English blend to go with the other 400 out there already. The answer is yes. This is good stuff and different enough to find a spot in my rotation.

Every puff of Merry Monk whispers "Happy Thanksgiving!","A pleasant winter to you.", "Blessed Yule. ", "Merry Christmas!", "Happy New Year!", and "Happy winter solstice.". It seems as if it were blended specifically for the season....Read More
