Product: G. L. Pease Sextant 2oz
Well mates this Sextant here is no Francis Drake’s “Golden Hind” or even Captain Blood’s “Arabella”. Personally I blame Rum toping. It applied skillfully of course and it does provide sweetness. Also, with noticeable exception of Latakia, it diminishes tastes of the components and actually fuse them into single one. No matter what pipe I used I really couldn’t distinguish Kentucky, Orientals, and Virginias. What I get is a somewhat sweet, not unpleasant, tobacco taste shadowed by strong Latakia presence. I had no problem smoking it but also didn’t find it to be of particular interest.
Therefore, on this particular exploration Captain Pease will have to go on without this old sailor. Will not buy this blend again....Read More

A wonderful balance of components. The hint of rum is almost only a suggestion. The Latakia and Virginia are both at the font and the Kentucky is just past a condiment level. It’s a heavy hitter that requires a nice relaxing block of time to really enjoy but it’s well worth it.

Tin note of sweet and smoky with a little spice. The multiple shades of brown Broken Flakes rub out easily. Tobacco is damp and may need a little drying. Burns slow with few relights. The strength is medium to strong and nic is medium. Flavoring is mild, with notes of sweet rum. Taste is full and consistent, with complex notes of smoky, herbal spices, musty wood, floral, dry earth, mild tangy sour, sweet grass, mild orange bitter, toasted bread, spicy, mild tart dark fruit, a sweet nutty background note, and a peppery retro. Latakia is barely leading the Virginias with Oriental/Turkish supporting. Kentucky is providing support where needed. Room note is tolerable, and aftertaste is great....Read More

Upon opening, the tin note is a nice mix of latakia, and sweet rum. After lighting, it starts the same way with smokey, sweet latakia, along with a subtle hint of the rum in the background. The Virginia's are there as well with a touch of fruity sweetness. Slight floral from the Orientals is there but just hinted at in the background. Kentucky adds some strength to this blend.
Overall, I find this to be another fantastic Pease blend. Similar style to C&D Black Frigate, but sweeter, and bolder, and with the rum more in the background. Highly recommended....Read More

Haharrrr! What a truly wondrous pirate smoke! This is absolutely a new favorite! It has such a great balance of smokeyness from the Latakia and the sweetness from the Virginia’s and rum! Just perfect for me! There is also a little pepper in my nose from the smoke and it’s nice! The Smokey and rummy tin note is ridiculous, I just keep cracking it open and breathing it in, it’s amazing! I’m sure there are plenty of other flavors I’m missing that more experienced pipers will pick up on, but all I know is I’m loving what I am experiencing! And that’s all that matters! Stays lit, smokes cool, and smells n tastes delicious! I’ll be plunderin all of this fyne tobacco from you bilge suckin scalawags!! Haharrrr!!...Read More
Sweet, Woody and a Good bit of Strength

The tin note is WONDERFUL. If you want an assertive rum-flavored English mixture, this is it. Sextant has a good dose of rum and melds very well with the components. The VA is woody and fermented sweet, which is balanced by the ever so slightly sour, charred oak of the Kentucky Dark Fired, which provides more nicotine. Dark Fired can be overdone, and we see it overdone in A LOT of mixtures. Here, its been done marvelously and in small proportion. It complements... it never overpowers. The Orientals are musty and add a bit of herbal quality. The Latakia is in the background. The nicotine is 3 - 3.5 out of 5. The nicotine is fairly stout in this mixture so tread carefully and smoke small bowls if you're sensitive to that....Read More

GL Pease is my new favorite brand. I haven't found anything from him that I don't want more of, and Sextant is no exception.
I tried this after enjoying Pease's Windjammer Navy flake and wanted to see what else he could do with that style. I think I still prefer Windjammer to Sextant by a whisker, but it is a very creative melding of a Navy flake with a bit of Olde England. On the stronger side, it works well in the evening or late afternoon. The tin note is delightfully rummy, it packs and lights well, burns well, develops nicely and doesn't bite. That dark fruit taste with boozy notes is like a Cherries Jubilee kind of experience, and I will come back to this one again for sure. Delightful....Read More

It took a while but this one really grows on me. It’s not a all-day smoke for me but a pretty good smoke on a crisp morning or later in the evening. Great tin note and awesome rum taste. Just great!
Upon further review, the ruling on the field is reversed

Revisited Sextant this A.M. with the morning coffee.
Stephen E nailed it above. The first half bowl was a perfect chorus of voices, a harmonious 'mp' (mezzo piano--- "moderately soft" volume) in the predawn. In the second half, the orientals swelled to 'mf' (mezzo forte---"moderately loud") to greet the sunrise; perhaps a bit too loud at that hour, but it will slide into the rotation for a later hour of the day.
