Utilizing the same components as McConnell's Special London Mature, the Mature blend features Virginias from Africa and Brazil alongside Orientals from Greece and Turkey. It's differentiated, though, by a slight topping of cocoa and anise for subtle sweetness that supports the tobaccos' natural flavors — all pressed and then rubbed out into a broken flake.

I've had 2 tins of this in my cellar for the last 2 years. Been anxious to try it, but deliberated when the right time was to crack it open. Finally decided tonight was the night. The tin note was unlike any Virginia blend I've experienced, probably due to the anise topping. Distinctly sweet and spicy, but not in an offensive way. The cut is shredded, thicker than a ribbon but smaller than a broken flake. The moisture level was perfect. I packed my Savinelli 904 KS slightly on the loose side, as I do most broken and shredded flakes, as the tobacco tends to expand in the bowl as it heats up. I used matches and it took to the flame beautifully. The anise topping did not have near the strong presence in the smoke as it did in the tin note. While it was still upfront with the sweet and spicy aroma, it was subtle and quickly took a back seat to the dry, bready, finish you expect with a quality and mature Virginia. The smoke is creamy and billows with a pleasant room note. The tobacco itself burned evenly in my bowl, and only required a relight once about half way when I paused to enjoy some hot green tea with honey, an excellent pairing. No issues with the relight and I enjoyed the rest of my bowl down to a fine white ash. I did not experience any bitter moisture in my stem, but I believe the mechanics of my smoking was a factor. Virginias need gentle sips to enhance the flavor profile, which also prevents moisture build up and gurgling. Overall, this was a fantastic experience for me, which was a pleasant surprise given the mixed reviews I've seen. Delicious molasses and caramel virgina. I didn't find the topping overpowering at all, but I had aged this one a few years so that might have mellowed it a bit.

Too Much Topping

I found the topping too persistent and heavy. It's so distracting that the Virginia leaf itself is somewhat lost, making this more an aromatic than otherwise. And yes, there will be ghosting.

I was looking forward to this tobacco for a while and let it age several months when I got it. I'm a Virginia fan and also a fan of a lot of topped tobaccos ( University Flake, Kendal Flake, and Epiphany, especially). I also like many anise topped tobaccos (SWR, CH). However, I found the topping on this to be a bit too much. I feel that the topping impedes the flavor of the tobacco and seems, to me at least, to drown the tobacco. I've given it many bowls in different pipes and with different packing techniques. It's just not for me. If topped Virginias are your Nirvana, please try it. The tobaccos, from what I can tell, are top notch. It just isn't what I expected and I found little to enjoy. Oh. And it will most def ghost your pipe....Read More

This is a nice and tasty smoke. The licorice topping is subtle but assertive. The tobacco is dark and comes Ready Rubbed. It's a bit on the moist side so I choose to dry it out for a good 30 minutes before I lock and load. There's nothing too exciting about this one but it never really gets boring. It's not a "sit and contemplate" smoke but more of a chore blend in my opinion and it sure beats the hell out of most characterless American aros. The nicotine is about medium so it will satisfy your nic cravings and the room note is very pleasant. This would be one of my choice smokes if I was worried about non smokers around me (which I never am) but I think most people will find the aroma to be quite pleasing. I will happily smoke both the tins that I picked up but once it's gone I don't think I'll be getting more. It's pretty much a "middle of the road" blend and average on every account but sometimes that's exactly what I'm wanting....Read More

The anise doesn't linger.

The anise scent is there right out of the tin, but it fades in the mason jar. It lights well, stays lit, but does produce a bit of gurgle halfway through. The anise taste really doesn't come through, though, just a cloying touch on the tongue, and not all the time.
