ng in that regard. The flake has good moisture content and is well pressed, and is a little chore to rub out properly. But it is a labor of love. It is like a Japanese tea ceremony, or, Morel mushrooms. The processing of the flake heightens the anticipation. You have to put some work into it, but are rewarded with beautiful ribbons of sweet golden Virginias, black and pungent, crumbling Perique, and toasty brown Izmir. It is the preparing of the fried chicken and potato salad before the Sunday picnic.*******************
Well balanced flavor, medium in strength. Sweet Virginias dominate, but this is not an overly sweet blend. Wonderful smoky Perique accent. But, it is the Izmir that gives uniqueness to this blend. Perhaps, a black tea flavor, or slight notes of Paprika. Just mildly and intriguingly spicy. It reminded me somewhat of the non-filtered Camel cigarettes I smoked as a kid. Burned well, but not on the cool side. Simply delicious!************************

th an intoxicating aroma of fruity, spicy goodness. Immediately I packed a bowl and never looked back, smoking the tin straight through in an attempt to fully enjoy the aged quality before it dissipated. Mostly I succeeded, but by the time I finished some of the finer, more volatile flavors and aromas had gone to the heavens. Nonetheless Sunday picnic is fantastic no matter how you smoke it. Well balanced, it is sometimes hard to pinpoint the exact flavors here (a true marriage once aged). A little fruity and spicy from the perique, especially as the bowl develops, and a flavor I can only describe as toasty, with the golden virginia providing a solid base. The flavors just get deeper and better if using the DGT, and it's nearly impossible not to savor every last sip near the bottom of every bowl. I haven't smoked Sunday Picnic fresh, but I will be soon, and I'll be cellaring several tins so I can chase that magnificent flavor once more. EDIT: I decided to simply cellar a pound instead of smoking it fresh. I'm sure it's mighty fine when fresh, but the aged version is truly one of a kind. Highly recommended. Read Less

The Izmir is the major player, burns cool and clean with a mostly consistent, mildly sweet, spicy, sour, and rather savory taste that translates to the lightly lingering after taste and room note.

e rest of the entire bowl it was sweet (BUT NOT OVERLY SO) with a mild spice taste. Never got hot and burned all the way down with no problems. I don't know how Cornell & Diehl does this, getting such good flavor, never getting hot, yet burns easily without biting your tongue. This has instantly become one of my most favorite smokes and, frankly, I am not easy to please! Just ask my wife. When I opened the tin I was met with the pleasant smell off fresh cut hay in a barn loft. Sweet and grassy. Beautiful looking flakes are good for fold and stuff or rub out nicely. The taste is Sweet with a little sour on the end. Not bad at all.

trong and full of flavor. A dedicated Virginia smoker could probably make due with just these two blends! Strength, spice, salty-sweetness and cool burn. I tend to appreciate Sunday Picnic during the day (or during the warmer months), and Red Carpet in the evenings after dinner due to the slightly richer flavor profile. To my tastes Sunday Picnic is (of course) brighter and the Turkish shines with the Perique in the supporting role, whereas it is pretty much all about the Perique in Red Carpet. Taste is medium to full and fairly consistent, with notes of sweet grass, floral, lemon, dry herbs, bread, earth, mild wood, mild raisin, very mild tart stewed fruit, and a moderate peppery retro. f the tin the tobacco is too moist for a good burn but if allowed a little dry time it lights and burns almost with no re-light required. If smoked with a good slow cadence you will be rewarded with a nice creamy sweetness and a peppery interplay. Some would try to describe which tobacco causes the different nuances of the smoke, I can't and won't. I will say that my appreciation of this blend has grown tremendously, it is not one that I will go to daily but it is certainly worthy of that special occasion smoke. Don't make the same mistake that I did of pack and puff straight out of tin with it or you will likely be disappointed.
First Impressions- Tin note is very musty, in a dry mushroom sort of way, almost stinky. Very moist out of tin, so much so, it makes me concerned for mold developing. Flavor lacks sweetness but is straight forward tobacco flavor with the Oriental coming through nicely. Even in spite of moisture level, light and burn were easy and consistent throughout entire bowl requiring little attention to keeping stoked. Ash was fluffy and gray. Room note (per my wife) was uno-offensive but smelled simply like burning tobacco. I find this okay for a Sunday afternoon but not one for every day. Read Less

he various types of tobaccos seem to be just right to create a remarkable, well rounded flavor. If Yenidje, rather than Izmir leaf were used, it would taste similar to McClelland's Tudor Castle... another extremely tasty oriental blend that is "Gone With The Wind." Well, "That's The Way Love Goes."
It doesn't get much better than this & the oriental adds an extra dimension that creates a unique, well rounded flavor that will leave most pipers craving for more. This mixture smokes cool & won't bite. Although not overly abundant, there is enough Lady N in this mix to add plenty of extra pleasure to an after picnic dinner. Needless to say, C & D are "crafty" blenders. Many fine blends circulating & this Simply Elegant series is aptly named.
