Great flavor, smoky and rich. Should be great for blending or straight, it's a hardy smoke, strong and tasty. Room note is intense but so is the flavor. I love it.

I sniff ammonia often). Lots of pepper and spice in the bag note, and a quality to it that steals your breath if you inhale too deeply, it is of my understanding that it needs a little jar time fresh which is exactly what I did. After a couple months that negative component does tone down a lot but at heart the granulated perique here is quite peppery. Not to be deterred I've used it in quite a few blends, with the peppery notes in mind, and have had several successes. Over time I've noticed the blends I use it in gain a sort of apricot note, which does translate faintly to the smoke. When used with these atrributes in mind I enjoy it. Commonly I do use mcclelland perique and sutliff long cut perique for their fruity, mushroom notes. It all depends what you're looking for. I haven't tried the long cut but I'm assuming it's more in line with the other long cut brands. This stuff is very easy to blend with due to its cut. Read Less

, packed it, and fired it up. I was pleasantly surprised. It is actually pretty good straight. It isn’t nearly as overwhelming as what a lot of people say. It will tickle your nose on the retro hale but it doesn’t burn your nose or overwhelm the senses as some say. My pipe never got hot at all but stayed cool the entire smoke. No bite at all.
The aroma from the top of my pipe (giving it a little sniff) was pleasant to me. It has the essence of stewed raisens/dark fruit at some moments. Then at other times, it has a mushroomy flavor, similarly to but a little stronger than Solani Aged Burley Flake. Also, I am not going to say it is like, but it reminded me of sour mash before it is distilled. (Strong fermentation taste and aroma.) That aroma is pleasant, at least to me.
I am not sure if you want to pack up a large pot or chimney pipe with this stuff but in a smaller pipe, it is very enjoyable, smokable, a nice change, and not single-dimensional.
My advice is don’t listen to the hype and try it for yourself. It will probably make hair grow on your chest (or cause it to fall out) BUT…You might be just as pleasantly surprised as what I was. Get yourself a tin of it when it is on sale, and give it a try. Read Less

atey, and earthy then spicy. The prior version was pretty spicy. The granulated mixes very well to were you can't see it in a blend. Personally, I like the long cut better so I can cut it to the size I want. But what they are offering now IMO is much better then the prior version. Read Less

Opened the bag and it made my eyes water. Smoked a small bowl and it is strong. I will use for blending. I should have read Old Timer's review first but the flavour is very good just to darn strong alone!

cause I know it's not going to last long I keep going back to it so much. I am not as highly experienced with perique as I am with some other tobaccos but I am able to say I find it both very smokeable and enjoyable. I put a pinch in my Mclelland #27 va and it is a most excellent match that adds to an already perfect tobacco. The pre-granulated cut is really nice too for my blending needs. Recommended. Read Less

t. Both also were a little more moist than I prefer but 20-30 min. spread on paper cured this.
The taste of this perique at first light is as strong as the most potent cigars that I have ever smoked. It has an awesome (at least to me) combination of spice and sweetness. After the first 5 min. I get used to the power and the sweetness and cool burning trick me into thinking that this perique is not that strong. I have learned from experience to draw slow and even on a pipe of this perique to get the best flavor.
By about the half-way point in most pipes I begin to feel the creeping vitamin N.... not in a bad way but enough to slow my smoking pace a bit. The flavor as this tobacco is smoked does not change much and by the end of a pipe my palate is adapted to the power and the flavor is easy to pick up. I am not an expert but I would call it a thick sweetness with some pepper and fruit notes in the background.
All in all this is great for smoking as-is or for blending. If you are on the fence about wanting to try it straight -- go for it! Just start with a small bowl and take it slow.
