Smells weird, smokes wonderful

Immediately after opening the tin, I was hit by a strange smell, like some rotten things but with a hint of fragrance.
The color is not pitch black like the image shown on the website, it's a dark brown, the color in the image of ribbon cut version C&D perique is more accurate.
I tried some straight and it smokes nothing(bad) like it smelled, it's the spicy taste in Va/Per flakes in pure form. (I'm not experienced enough to describe it in detail...)
The nicotine is very strong.
Since I didn't get any of this weird smell from Va/Per flakes' tin note, I think they all have some casing or topping to mitigate it, am I crazy?...Read More

The best perique you can get commercially. I smoke a full bowl of this stuff almost everyday. It's profoundly delicious. Flavors detected are dark chocolate, molasses, earth/mushroom, fig/prune, umami soy sauce-like richness, vinegar tang, black pepper/cayenne spice, damp wood, and a nice tarty plum finish. It also has this buttery, nutty, toast-like, syrupy sweetness every now and again. The flavors are great through the retro hale and on the palate. And the smoke texture is rich, full, and smooth. I wanted to experiment with some perique so I picked this up. I normally smoke very mild aros or englishes so my nicotine tolerance is light, take this with a pound of salt. I mixed this up with a very scientific big pinch of virginia, small pinch of BC, and a small-med pinch of this. I got the musty earthy taste and liked it. Not much pepper, very slight. The nicotine level was quite noticeable to me and I only packed a half bowl. I will say that I didn't feel like I was steeped in cigarette smoke afterward like some tobaccos tend to do. 0.5 star off because it smells like s**t before lighting. Light it up, then everything is good. Taste creamy and sweet, remind me of Orlik Golden Slice (of course, it's a VaPer blend).
