Picking up a pipe again in Canada, where different provinces limited what you can or can't buy , I picked up a plain labelled HH Dark Fired from one of the last tobacconists in Montreal that sell pipe tobacco. Whilst I've enjoyed a fine selection of aromatics and English blends from SP , this was the first pureplay blend I'd tried and I must say it was a wonderful experience! The simplicity of the beautifully formed flakes that rub out nicely . I used the old school method to fill the bowl of my Lavanelli Briar. Char lit beautifully...a quick tamp...and then a full light to enjoy this wonderfully strong mix of Virginias and Burleys masterfully intertwined with wisps of white smoke filling the room with a fine tobacco note. My old teachers at a private school deep in the English countryside used to smoke pipes all day in their masters' gowns. This takes me back to 1980 and chalk boarded classrooms with wooden floors in an old English country house. That's what this evokes. Tradition, old values and fine quality. Recommended Read Less

f smokiness that you get from latakia, it's closer to that of smoked meat. The dark fired Kentucky's retain the nuttiness from normal burleys, so the result reminded me of smoked almonds. There's a little bit of tanginess and sweetness as well, which i'm assuming comes from the Virginias, but it's definitely in the background. , however, and ODF is no exception. As a matter of fact, I think Old Dark Fired is their best blend. No... I'll go one further. I think Old Dark Fired by Mac Baron is one of the best pipe tobaccos in existence today, if not THE best. I tried ODF and Bold Kentucky back to back during my days of tobacco discovery, and I loved both of them, but as I now bore down on a select few to stock up on ODF has become the crown jewel of my collection. It really is that damn good. Most blends I buy a 1.5 or 2 ounce tin to try and if I really like it I'll buy a half pound, and on a singular event with plum pudding special reserve I purchased 1.5 pounds. Now, for the first time ever, I purchased five delicious pounds of the ready rubbed, and I'll be purchasing two (maybe 3) one pound boxes of the flakes next to make sure I never run out of ODF again. Eventually I'll snag a pound of the other HH blends as well. I know Mac Baron had a few tons of this fabled leaf in supply, so it should be in stock for a little while, but I'm not taking any chances after watching so many other blends go the way of the Dodo. Mac Baren's makes ODF in the English tradition, which involves steam pressing of the large blocks of tobacco. Old Dark Fired is loaded with savory, sweet, bbq, vinegar, and smoky notes that will delight the senses both before and during the smoke. Hands down, this is the most addictive tin note I've ever had the pleasure of inhaling, and it only gets better with age. The savory, sweet and smoky bbq and vinegar of the special dark fired plays magnificently with the sweet bread and lightly fruity virginias, and this marriage of flavors will confound your taste buds in the best way until the bottom third of the bowl, where the smoky dark fired starts to edge out the other flavors slightly. Despite that, ODF is unlike most other DF blends in that the bottom of the bowl isn't completely dominated by the dark fired, and though it does strengthen the deeper you go, it never gets harsh and the overall flavor remains intact which is impressive. I would argue that this blend is medium in both strength and nicotine, and for smokers of English style flakes, very easily an all day smoke (especially with a little age). Its really surprising how easy ODF is on the tongue while flooding the senses with a beautiful, deep, and unique dark fired flavor, while somehow not subduing the Virginias too much. Even acknowledging the high quality of Mac Barens HH line of tobaccos they have really outdone themselves here. If you like Dark Fired tobaccos flavors, and you haven't tried this blend yet, then you are doing yourself a disservice! I cant recommend Old Dark Fired enough (in flake or ready rubbed). Read Less

SO, I mason jarred it and forgot about it for just shy of 1 year, which we all know isn’t long at all when it comes to aging tobacco.
It still had a saucey, Smokey hay jar note, but it also had a molasses scent to it.

Well, it's damn good. The glowing reviews are well deserved, the flavor is amazing and even my uneducated palate can pick out the subtleties. The burley is predominate of course and the taste is bold and wonderful, but it doesn't overpower the Virginias.
The only slightly negative thing I can say about it, and this will not be a factor for everybody, is that the nic is pretty strong. I have a relatively low tolerance and have to smoke this gem in a small bowl and, sadly, I don't think it would be an all day smoke for me. Every day, but not all day.
I give it 4 stars for sissies like me, but if you can take the Vitamin N hit, it's 5 stars all the way. Read Less

After loading this slightly rubbed and aired-out flake in my briar poker, I began the char light, and after two char lights its going fine. It has a dark nutty flavor like that of a roasted brazil nut with just a slight sweet Virginia taste and aroma sneaking in the back door, the retro hale brings a spicy fermented pepper note to the party, what a treat!
As I work my way down the bowl, this tobacco gets better and better leaving me wanting more. To me the burley takes the lead here and never completely wavers to the Virginia, however the Virginia stays in tack with just the right amount of sweetness. It burns cool. No wet mess at the end in my pipe. I have many Mac Baren blends in my cellar, this blend to me, ranks right up there with HH Matured Virginia and HH Vintage Syrian. Read Less

y time I smoke this I am really pleased with the efforts of Mac Baren to produce such a wonderful tobacco. It seems very clean in burning and taste. I notice very little added flovoring with a good strong flavor and no goo or heavy topping taste usually associated with EU tobaccos. ark and tightly pressed as with IrF and HS (tightly pressed flakes is new for a Mac Baren flake) and similar in size to Ir F. They are stacked into three neat rows. They are cut a tad thinned than IrF which makes for easier packing.
The flakes were at a good moisture consistency for packing and lighting. In a blind smoke, I would never ever guess this was from Mac Baren. This is one fine smoke. IrF and HS are two of my favorite tobaccos ever and now I have a third in the same genre. HH ODF has a very rich, natural flavor profile with solid, pure tobacco taste. It exhibits a nice spiciness while smoking. Unlike the spiciness of Perique, there is no pepper notes at all, which is a good thing for me as I don't care for Perique. I don't think there is any casing, and if there is, I can not detect it. It has a healthy dose of nicotine that takes an immediate front row seat. By the way, this offering is a smoother smoke as it doesn't seem to have the harshness I sometimes experience with a bowl of IrF.
I have quite a bit of IrF and HS but I can see myself reaching for this new offering from Mac Baren when I want a rich, pure tobacco smoke. It is simply fantastic in my book. If you like IrF and/or HS, you will not be disappointed at all. I enjoy other Mac Baren tobaccos, but this one is way ahead of the pack and is a major player in the pantheon of fine smoking tobaccos. My hat goes off to the blenders at Mac Barens for introducing such a winner. 10 stars across the board!! Read Less
