Mac Baren's HH Old Dark Flake is hot pressed, meaning that during the pressing, heat is added by steam to the tobaccos which causes the tobacco to intensify the marrying process, ultimately giving us a bolder tobacco. This tobacco is sensational. I prefer to just stuff and puff this flake. No dry time. My tin is fresh and very moist. Leathery, oily, and dark uniform cuts. It starts out strong with a little sharpness in the sinuses. The flavor is ok, but nothing to get excited about. About a quarter of the way through the bowl is when the tobacco begins to heat up and meld together releasing it's deeply satisfying, smoky, and vaguely sweet flavor. The occasional aggressive draw and quick cadence with pluming retro-hale invites rich hints of caramel, BBQ, and a faint unsweetened Cocoa. It's hard for me not to freight train this sublime flake. I just need to remember to enjoy the ride and preserve my tongue. The last quarter is completely and perfectly rich. Nirvana. I could smoke this every day. This was my first experience with dark fired Kentucky. Are they all this good? I can tell you HH Bold Kentucky definitely is. I can't decide between the two which I prefer. I smoked them nearly back to back and started with Bold Kentucky. The juxtaposition made Old Dark Fired seem less flavorful and mild. When I smoke only ODF, it seems perfect. If you're an animal like me, perhaps start with ODF. I think I'm going to keep them both around. Highly suggest loading up on them both. Would hate for these to disappear....Read More

Just broke away from aromatics recently and found I love English blends. Figured my palate was sophisticated enough to jump for the Dark fired Kentucky blends. And I was not disappointed. My wife don’t like the room note really, she says campfire burning fireworks (we’re a suburban family and don’t camp much lol). But I enjoy the smokiness and thick smoke. Strongest nic hit for me so far but I have a tolerance and I’m not wimping out. But still noticeable. All in all top 5 blend for me in non-aromatic blends.

I pull straight from the tin and fold and stuff a flake then break a flake up to create a kindling type bit on top. Perfect everytime.

I just ordered 5 more tins to cellar since we won’t be having this blend much longer in the states from what I hear. So I jumped on the wagon and stocked up. I highly recommend whether you’re a new pipe smoker or seasoned and looking to try. DONT MISS OUT ON THIS ONE!!...Read More

The charring light might underwhelm you. This is the dark richness I've heard so much about? Then the flavors settle into your taste buds and you think "wow, maybe there is something to it." You keep puffing and things start to get spicy. The smoke may very well threaten to overwhelm, but you can't put it down. You're halfway through the bowl. You start to notice flavors that seem to come out of nowhere - dark fruit, wood smoke, fatty brisket falling apart at the touch. I can't believe how good this blend is. I don't taste the virginias at all but It is "deeply satisfying", truly. I smoked a bowl of this for 50 minutes without relighting. I was ripping clouds and sipping, it didn't matter. It was the 12th pipe I'd ever smoked. I have been smoking pipes for about 25 years now and this is definitely the best I have ever had. Not for the faint of heart for sure. It's got a big earthy earthy, smoky flavor that is good for a few puffs with a glass of Canadian whiskey when you want a strong tobacco to finish the evening. I find the flake just a tad richer or bolder. I bought the pound to save money and was not disappointed. I like to leave the flakes intact so a regular mouth pint jar works, the wide mouth is just a bit shorter. To save money I cut the flake into cubes and mix it 50/50 with ready rubbed.
