5 yr Sixpence: all the above but so smooth. Fresh artisanal croissant comes in. It's perfectly balanced. It has more levels of subtly and loses some complexity for a much more unified profile. The Virginias are incredible. The perique smooths out and loses any harshness. Every year of age makes it into a tobacco of a whole other class.
Overall it's awesome from its packaging and turns celestial with age! I'm cellaring as many tins of it as I can. I can't wait for the coming years with this blend. Read Less

UPDATE - seeing the comment above, I'll qualify my opinion for now. Maybe there was a QC issue somewhere along the line. As my fellow reviewer said, G.L. Pease just doesn't do bland and all these reviews lead me to believe it's something on my end. I'all try ordering another tin, as I don't want to return tins that have been aging for a year now. smell out of the tin was...bready? I can´t quite put my finger on it. I loved it but at the same time hated it. As for the smoke, obviously this was my first encounter with DFK. So, of course i got a mild nic-hit, which made me put some distance between me and this blend (I´m a really short lad, so don´t think it has a big hit in the nic department, rather it´s that nicotine hits me faster). Anyways, this blend just kind of sitted in my shelf through the months. Finally I decided to finish the blend because I hate wasting tobacco. And my oh my, what a change. I still can´t quite put my finger on this blend but it just kind of grew on me. Even though I never tasted that alcohol topping, the leaves started to evolve and open in my tongue. What at first was an intrusive and towering smoke became a sweet and bold treat. I was kind of secretely dissapointed when my tin ran out. So, in conclussion: the tobacco is top notch quality. I´m considering buying another tin and let it just cellar for a little bit. Take it really slow and sip and enjoy this blend (I now call this a reading blend. Just sit, enjoy and don´t rush it). I´m really looking forward as to how it will taste now that I have a more develop taste as far as ´baccies go. Read Less

th Sixpence, on that second tin. I first sampled Sixpence in spring 2020 and though I finished the tin within a few days, it did not impress me, and in a way I was simply trying to get rid of it. I don’t know what happened, if its ingredients were not blended to its standard measurements, but I didn’t reorder another until March 2021. I’m thankful I did. For I favorably reviewed a few other Pease blends and looked up the components of Sixpence. Wait—Dark Fired Kentucky, Perique and Black Cavendish? Those are among my favorite components. What could have gone awry? This didn’t seem right. Suffice it to say that second tin, ordered one year later, gave me all I had hoped for. The tin note contained something that at first smelled funky and Camembert-like (something I love in Warped’s Kings Stride and Tabac Manil’s four blends). Then I sniffed again, and again. That funky smell was imagined; the true tin note was a strong one or rum, whiskey, or both. That liquor element continued past the tin note and char light and down to the bottom of the bowl, and this proved consistent with my ensuing smoke sessions of Sixpence. So in this way, this broken flake is akin to the Navy flakes I’ve enjoyed. But there ends the similarities with said Navy flakes. For here the Perique is dominant, the DFK plays a strong supporting role, and the Virginias are there to sweeten everything and the Cavendish enriches it and mellows it out. Pease actually delivers an impressive medium-strength and medium-bodied blend hard to fit into a category. Aromatic or English it clearly is not, and it’s more multifaceted than a VaPer or a BurVa. I’ll soon be buying ten or more tins to stow away in my study’s closet (this pipelover’s cellar). There’s one caveat to this one that I remind myself of, and you may find the same. If you don’t fancy a rum or liquor topping or flavor in your pipe tobacco, then don’t smoke bowls of these back-to-back or consecutively. Smoke a bowl of Sixpence and then puff other blends and come back another day for a bowl of this. At times I feel Pease topped it with too generous of a portion of rum, and I can taste it throughout the bowl. 4.5 stars. Read Less

flavor of the smoke. The tobacco itself is a well presented broken flake, and comes just a touch moist. However... I just give this tobacco a gentle rub and pack it straightaway and gently with no drying time, and In my opinion this is the way to go. This will cause a moderately wet smoke but for me, its really not a hassle and I want every last molecule of flavor to make it to my tongue and nose (not too wet or a smoke). Just like the tin note the flavors that wash over the senses are a woody smokiness and light to medium virginia hay flavors, and just enough fruity and spicy perique to really round out the experience. Theres also a creamy flavor that reminds me faintly of The Virginia Cream, which must be the virginias, and also a spicyness. Sixpence is a masterpiece. If Bach were a modern tobacco blender he would bow to Mr. Pease for engineering this symphony of flavors, balanced just right. It is the gold standard of dark fired and perique blends, and out of all that ive tried is my new favorite. Below I saw this compared to Gaslight, and in a sense i can understand it because both are uniquely mysterious and delicious, but i feel this could easily be an all day smoke where gaslight is strong enough to stay an occasional delight, or perhaps once a day. If you love the flavor of good american dark fired and virginia then do yourself a favor and try this blend. This is a 5 star blend. The only reason i docked a star is that i had some issue with my 8 oz. tins being too dry to recover and smoke, but smokingpipes service was above and beyond and they helped me resolve my issues and assured me that the issue is known and being corrected. Customer service has been very helpful. A++. Consistency is important, and though my issue was an anomaly i have to consider it. When i receive my new 8 oz. tial guilt for doing so in this case. Sixpence is of clear quality. The tobacco is lovely--Greg Pease does not put out offal. This one is just not for me. Where others taste a hint of anise or absinthe, I sense heat, like I'm puffing too urgently regardless of how delicately I nibble. However, I found that when I mixed a small amount of this with Amphora and Lane Limited's TK-6 Cherry, it was amazing. A great tobacco, if only I could tolerate a little harshness to smoke a full bowl of this on its own! Read Less
