Whether their origins hail from some program that is always running quietly in the brain stem, or something closer to the Jungian concept of the Collective Unconscious, some things are just a given, and when they aren't it's a sign of something having gone wrong. Case in point; the Ik tribe of Uganda was singled out for anthropological study, because the adults presented an utter absence of automatic protective behavior regarding the welfare of infants (in one infamous observation, a toddler slowly ambled into a huge village fire in front her parents and a dozen tribesman, and their only reaction was to laugh).
