About This Pipe
Jeff Gracik is one of America's most renowned pipe makers, with the artisan getting his start in the craft the same year he began work on his graduate degree. With a pair of briar blocks and some pre-formed stems, he set to work on carving his first two pipes completely with hand tools and on the floor of his in-law's kitchen. This sparked the blaze of his passion for the craft, and his determination in carving pipes of excellency resulted in him visiting Todd Johnson, Tonni Nielsen, and Jody Davis, combining his already self-taught skill with teachings from some of the world's most accomplished artisans.
The Calabash is one of the most iconic profiles in all of pipe making, from traditional gourd examples to modern reinterpretations, and it's not hard to see why. This piece from J. Alan is a testament to that, and it additionally acts as a bridge of sorts between the aforementioned traditional and modern styles. Maintaining the curling, sinuous outline which has made the Calabash an icon, this piece is additionally paired to a chamber cap made from boxwood, the rim having received a slight hollow carving that defines its slope toward a more broad, rounded base which fits snugly into the condensation chamber. Said condensation chamber curls and expands out from a nearly parabolic transition, its trumpeting form creating a wealth of negative space that allows for smoke from the chamber cap to accumulate and cool, ensuring pleasurable smokes. At the aft side, the shank, too, curls and expands more gently, coming to a rounded face which is surrounded by a fluid ridgeline that sweeps through the flanks and dissipates as it nears the transition. A smartly curved stem of black vulcanite lends this piece a comfortable smoking posture and matches the dark, inky sandblast of the briar, the stummel's finish showcasing a wealth of rippling grain.
