About This Pipe
Todd Johnson has earned international acclaim for his highly original, sculptural approach to pipe making. Though he holds a degree in aesthetics from Yale, his skills were truly refined under the guidance of Tom Eltang and Lars Ivarsson. Traveling to Denmark well before it became common practice, Johnson immersed himself in the principles of both beauty and functionality — an influence that continues to define much of his work, including this Blowfish.
While not small in absolute terms, this piece conveys a sense of compactness thanks to its broad bowl and stout shank. The bowl is muscular and full-bodied, shaped by a pair of wrapping ridgelines that create an asymmetrical, slightly lopsided profile while reinforcing its structural presence. The upturned shank and steeply curved saddle stem enhance the composition's dynamic profile while encouraging a comfortable smoking posture. The stummel is finished in a rugged sandblast that reveals pronounced ring grain across the fore and rim, with dense fields of birdseye along the flanks.
