About This Pipe
Werner Mummert's extensive experience in engineering is evident throughout his body of work, with the German carver demonstrating a penchant for playful, imaginative designs that push the boundaries of pipe making. A striking showcase of his style, this paneled Cavalier by Mummert is a wholly unique interpretation of the classic shape, its composition a perfect marriage of practicality and whimsy. This piece also has a strong architectural quality to it, with the flat heel of the bowl forming a sturdy foundation for the pipe to sit without the aid of a stand. From the bowl's heel, thick, straight walls rise toward the rim, framed by four crisp facets. Four more facets frame the shank, which takes on a geometric stance as it emerges from the bowl and then turns upward at a crisp 90-degree angle to meet a bent saddle stem of jet-black vulcanite. The Cavalier shape's requisite removable foot cap has instead been placed at the aft side of this pipe's shank, allowing for moisture to be drained for a cool, dry smoking experience.
The stummel wears a high-relief sandblast as crisp as the pipe's shaping, revealing wave after wave of ring grain across the bowl and shank alike. A two-toned color palette adds further visual intrigue to the piece: The shank wears a bright honey-blonde hue, while the bowl is dressed in a ruby stain so vivid it has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. With the bowl and shank taking on such rigid, rectangular forms and stained two distinctly different colors, this Cavalier takes the concept of "color-blocking" to a whole new level. This piece includes a maintenance tool for the Cavalier engineering, presented in a more subdued color palette of black and cool metal, contrasting with the stummel's striking colors.
