About This Pipe

Michael Butera has been crafting pipes since the '70s, and he has trained many of today's well-known American artisans, including Larry Roush, Steve Weiner, and Michael Frey. Since he produces a limited number of pipes, estate offerings from Butera are a rare treat for collectors, making this Rhodesian quite the exciting find.

This offering exudes poise and elegance in both form and finish. The extra high waist of the muscular bowl emphasizes its pert posture, as does the tight-knit transition that introduces an upswept shank-and-stem arrangement. The high-kicking shank and deeply bent stem promote a comfortable smoking posture, while the bowl's flowing fore wall conforms to the contours of the palm nicely. Stunning grain abounds in this piece, with tight tendrils of flame grain climbing the flanks and dense clusters of birdseye dancing along the rim and underside of the piece. These handsome grain patterns are dressed in a smooth, glossy finish and a warm, earthy stain, which makes an excellent backdrop for the lovely band of cool silver at the junction.
