About This Pipe
Davide Iafisco is an Italian pipe maker; however, his unique style exceeds far beyond the scope of Italian aesthetics, instead revealing a variety of influences. Having studied under master pipe makers such as Claudio Cavicchi, Teddy Knudsen, Adam Davidson, and Chris Asteriou, Iafisco's comprehensive pipe-making education has led him to incorporate a wide variety of design cues into his work, resulting in a portfolio that encompasses everything from traditional Anglo-French creations to unorthodox Freehands. Training and influences aside, all of Iafisco's pipes are unified by gorgeous line work, balanced shaping, and excellent engineering.
This Blowfish is emblematic of the artisan's signature style, as it features the clean, flowing lines, supple curves, and precise engineering for which he has earned his reputation. Measuring just over 5.25 inches, it's a rather compact piece, yet within its constrained proportions is a medley of flowing lines and organic, asymmetrical flourishes. Thanks to the dynamic, undulating ridgelines framing both flanks of the piece, the bowl appears to torque and twist, lending the piece a lively sense of implied momentum. The shank, equally complex in shaping, curls inward toward the bowl, furthering the composition's implied movement. An arcing stem of vulcanite completes the composition, its high-kicking posture offering a comfortable clench. Dressed in a smooth, deep chestnut finish, the stummel showcases a wealth of stunning grain, which Iafisco has read to perfection and maximized with aplomb.
