About This Pipe
Tonino Jacono entered the pipe business in 1981, finishing and selling pipes that were shaped by his brother-in-law from briar acquired and drilled by his father-in-law. After two years, Jacono left Calabria — the region comprising the Italian peninsula's southwestern "toe" — and moved north to Jesi, a municipality near Italy's Adriatic coast. Jacono began making pipes under his own name in Jesi, and still does today, with a philosophy of making high-quality pipes at a fair price point.
Jacono opted for olivewood over briar for this Cherrywood, olivewood being known for its bright coloring and distinctive grain pattern. The bowl is quite deep at about two inches in all, and deeply forward-canted to balance the shank and saddle stem of swirling green-and-white acrylic behind it. The olivewood affords the bowl a fascinating horizontal grain pattern of dark brown against a bright backdrop near in color to light walnut, and the smooth finish allows the grain to shine unimpeded. Lovely in shape but truly extraordinary in material and grain, this Cherrywood is sure to please any smoker in pursuit of a new desk pipe.
