About This Pipe

A bold Oom Paul rendition, Rattray's "160" shape characterizes the historic shape-chart standard with a dramatic bend and pronounced heel that extends through the transition. Traditional versions of the Oom Paul often fit it with a tall, cylindrical bowl, but this piece from the Scottish marque reveals a robust, Brandy-like form with a distinctive taper toward the rim. Such shaping softens the otherwise imposing profile for a comfortable jaw-hanger that delights with robust curves and a substantial presence in hand.

For many, pipe smoking is a refuge of sorts, a retreat away from life's busyness and a safe haven that encourages peacefulness, contemplation, and relaxation. Rattray's Sanctuary series honors this aspect with a line of pipes accented by metal fitments along the shank end and stem base — the former etched with Rattray's ancient triskelion logo. While such accoutrements mirror the aesthetic of a spigot mount, this Sanctuary pipe still maintains a standard mortise and tenon arrangement, drilled to accommodate a 9mm filter. Moreover, the Sanctuary "G" sub-series offers pieces fashioned from ashwood, with the medium presented here in a sandblasted finish.
