About This Pipe

Wandi Riyadi is one of Indonesia's few artisan pipe makers, and he boasts a broad and impressive portfolio. His work reflects both Scandinavian and Japanese influences, with legendary carvers like Bo Nordh, the Ivarssons, and Hiroyuki Tokutomi informing his own unique, eclectic style. With influences such as Riyadi's, it should come as no surprise, then, that the artisan has produced many iterations of the iconic Fugu throughout his career, each one more beautiful than the last. This particular rendition, for example, is quite stunning.

A pair of flowing ridgelines frame the bowl of this Fugu, while several more frame the shank, which curls inward toward the bowl, evoking the look of a flipping fish tail. What these flourishes lack in symmetry, they make up for in harmony, and together, they lend the piece an element of organicism and a strong sense of dynamic movement. The partial rustication lends the piece further organic appeal, offering plenty of rich texture for hand to appreciate. The smooth sections of briar reveal tight cross grain and dense birdseye, adding both textural and tonal contrast to the piece. A push-style stem joins the stummel, completing the piece as it continues the composition's fluid momentum.
