About This Pipe
Belgian-born artisan Bruno Nuttens' entrance into the pipe world came by way of an estate batch he purchased in 2012. He only intended to keep and smoke one pipe from this batch, but he hated the thought of wasting the rest, so he began restoring them. His skills only grew from there, and he went on to restore over 7,000 pipes in six years. After being inducted into the Confrérie des Maîtres Pipiers de Saint-Claude in 2013, Nuttens began making pipes, inspired and assisted by fellow inductee Pierre Morel. He turned to carving full-time in 2018, and he has since distinguished himself as a deft craftsman of high-quality smoking instruments such as this Handmade Lovat.
As the name suggests, the Handmade line is comprised of pipes shaped and finished entirely by hand, thus representing the most singular, time- and labor-intensive offerings to come from the artisan's workshop. Elegant in shaping and distinguished in finish, this Lovat is certainly a lovely offering from the line. The bowl is tall and sleek, and paired to an equally sleek shank-and-stem arrangement. The protracted length of the latter offers ample room to comfortably drape a digit, and the former houses a generous chamber depth with plenty of space for one's favorite tobacco blend. Save for the smooth rim, which wears a vibrant chestnut stain, the stummel wears a dark, smoky sandblast that emphasizes the briar's grain in vivid tactile detail. A gleaming band of cool metal finishes off the composition, adding an elegant dose of flash to the mix.
