About This Pipe

Carlo Scotti brought the Castello brand to life in the late 1940s, crafting his pipes in the same shadow of the Alps as the likes of Savinelli and the Rovera family. Scotti's workshop would eventually yield the independent workshops of Caminetto and Radice, both founded by former Castello artisans, but the Castello tradition continues today with the neoclassic designs that make northern Italy such an influential player in the industry of pipe making.

This Oom Paul of Castello's is a remarkable work with cross grain and birdseye alternating across the bowl, a rich stain similar in color to beechwood, and a glossy, smooth finish that bends and reflects light with incredible grace. The walls of the bowl are muscular and tall and backed by the (customary) sharply upturned shank and tall, bent stem — this one made of black acrylic and ending with a wide bit. Castello more or less stuck to the shape chart with this piece, but its fine craftsmanship, silky finish, and beautiful coloring elevate it far above the typical Oom Paul.
