About This Pipe
Carlo Scotti brought the Castello brand to life in the late 1940s, crafting his pipes in the same shadow of the Alps as the likes of Savinelli and the Rovera family. Scotti's workshop would eventually yield the independent workshops of Caminetto and Radice, both founded by former Castello artisans, but the Castello tradition continues today with the neoclassic designs that make northern Italy such an influential player in the industry of pipe making.
Castello's Kino collection — so dubbed for the nickname of Scotti successor Franco Coppo, who passed away in 2025 — numbers only 100 pieces, of which this Billiard is number 63. The bowl is lightly tapered from the waist and quite tall, reaching nearly two inches in depth. The waves of shallow sandblast do an excellent job of accentuating flame grain underneath and providing a rich, smooth touch in the fingers, and the dark stain that covers the stummel is contrasted well by the accent and stem — silver and black acrylic, respectively. The accent is quite wide and well-crafted, and the stem tapered to a very lightly concave bit. The sandblast covers much of the visual intrigue of this pipe as the stummel takes up so much of its length, but the silver accent truly sets this piece apart from Castello's other offerings with a dash of brilliance.
