About This Pipe

Given his background having grown up in the gorgeous scenery of the Austrian Alps, it is no surprise that Christian Ruetz is deeply inspired by nature. This can be seen in both his unique "broken" motif in his shank-and-stem arrangements and the name of his first signature shape, the Gaia — both of which can be seen in this piece. Viewing this shape from the side, it at first appears to be a chubby bent Egg or bent Apple with an asymmetric rim. Things get even more interesting, however, when looking at it from the top. Gazing down into the modest chamber, one can see that, horizontally, the bowl is even plumper than it is when viewed from the side. The entire rim is chamfered, but the flanks are wider than the front and back, making for a mesmerizing view, almost like staring into an eye. As for the "broken" motif, Ruetz's inspiration from the natural world is clearly visible. The edges are organic, reminiscent of the discontinuity between a broken tree trunk and its severed stump. In the discontinuity of the break between shank and stem, a continuation of line and form can still be found &38212; a considerable feat considering the jagged, unpredictable texture of the plateau.

Not only is this pipe an artistic masterpiece and a testament to Ruetz's respect for Mother Nature, it is also immensely practical, being rendered with compact proportions and in a light weight suitable for pocket carrying. This is the kind of pipe you can bring along anywhere for a quick smoke break in which you can rest your mind admiring the boundless beauty in the piece's supple form.
