Christian Ruetz Pipes

An Austria native, Christian Ruetz has spent his life enveloped by some of the most beautiful natural scenes on the planet, surrounded by stunning Alps and immersed in ancient forests, and his pipe-making journey began under similarly idyllic circumstances. His father-in-law gifted him a family-heirloom set of vintage carving knives crafted in the Tyrol mountains. In the evenings after his day job as a maintenance technician, Ruetz used these knives to make his first pipe at his living-room coffee table — a labor of patience, trial and error, and the hands-on skills he'd gained as a technician.

Since Austria is something of an island in the world of pipe making — compared to, say, the United States, Italy, or Denmark — his early career progressed by learning from failure and constantly problem solving and improvising. He developed a relationship with fellow Austrian pipe maker Peter Matzhold, and their friendship burgeoned his pipe-making acumen thanks to Matzhold's advice and tutelage. Moreover, colleagues like Dirk Heinemann, Chris Asteriou, and Micah "Yeti" Cryder have greatly influenced Ruetz. Now, he benefits from a fully outfitted workshop and crafts handmade pipes of the utmost quality.

One of the advantages of learning to make pipes without much access to a broader pipe community was that Ruetz was free to explore a distinctive design style without outside expectation. Thanks to his natural surroundings and a workshop view of the Tschirgant massif, his style draws heavily on nature, especially mountains. He regularly highlights plateau in his designs — best represented by his signature "Broken" shapes, which feature briar plateau along the shank face and stem base to achieve an ever-rustic and rugged aesthetic that honors the beautiful imperfections inherent in nature.

Ruetz combines this deep appreciation for nature and organic shaping with the technical finesse of a master craftsman. He primarily uses high-grade Italian briar, and hand cuts all of his stems from vulcanite rod. Also an avid pipe smoker, Ruetz appreciates tobaccos subtly flavored with coffee or chocolate, and his favorite remains Sillem's Linea Epoque Antique. When not crafting artisan pipes, he enjoys spending time in nature, whether hiking, rock climbing, or simply observing wildlife, gathering creative energy for his next pipe.
