About This Pipe
Austrian native Christian Ruetz, drawing on the hands-on skills he honed as a maintenance technician, creates pipes that stand apart in both form and technique. His distinctive style emerged from the solitude of his pipe-making journey: Isolated by geography and without access to other artisans, Ruetz developed his methods through trial and error, almost entirely free from outside influence. This early experimentation and improvisation culminated in a singular approach to shaping and finishing, later enriched by the guidance and friendship of fellow carver Peter Matzhold. With the Tschirgant massif visible from his workshop, Ruetz draws inspiration from nature, particularly the mountains, combining this reverence for his homeland with exceptional technical precision.
Ruetz's mountain-inspired shaping takes many forms, most notably through his use of plateau — a feature most evident in his signature "Broken" shapes. This Tomato exemplifies that approach: despite its "Broken" status, the design is full and harmonious, save for the shank end, which features a purposeful break — a visible crack revealing hints of plateau. Beyond the break, the shank continues into a demurely curved saddle stem. The break accentuates the shank's gradual flare and the elegant curve of the hand-cut vulcanite stem, while echoing the plateau visible along the rim.
The pipe's fluid form — with its sweeping shank and stem and broad, forward-canted bowl — offers a dynamic, lively outline, enhanced by a bright, contrast-rich smooth finish. This finish showcases striking flame grain along the bowl's flanks and clusters of birdseye across the rim and heel. A sophisticated marriage of aesthetics and shaping, this piece stands out for both its superlative grain and its boundary-pushing technical design.
