About This Pipe
Austrian artisan Christian Ruetz began his pipe-making journey at his living room table, pursuing the art of carving through sheer trial and error and drawing from the hands-on experience he gained from working as a maintenance technician. Today, Ruetz has a full-fledged workshop, and he has cultivated a style deeply rooted in nature. He also cites Dirk Heinemann, Chris Asteriou, and Micah "Yeti" Cryder as formative influences, as well as fellow Austrian artisan Peter Matzhold, who offered his tutelage to the burgeoning carver.
Ruetz's deep appreciation for nature is showcased in every pipe he carves, with this "Broken" Godfather being one example. Replete with plump, gentle curves, soft asymmetry, and craggy texture, this is a beautifully organic piece. The Godfather is a variation of one of Ruetz's other signature shapes, the Gaia, and is dedicated to those who aided the artisan in his pursuit of the pipe-making craft. This piece also features one of Ruetz's signature "broken" shanks, which makes excellent use of negative space and highlights the briar's craggy plateau — a texture the carver admires for its resemblance to the mountains that have surrounded him all his life. Impeccable in both form and function, this pipe presents the perfect opportunity to broaden your horizons and add a piece from an up-and-coming artisan to your collection.
