About This Pipe
Hailing from Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Jerry Zenn devoted a quarter century to working as an automotive mechanic before pursuing pipe making as a full-time craft. The shift proved seamless, informed by decades of practical experience, mechanical intuition, and expertise with precision tools and machinery. In short order, Zenn established a formidable reputation and today stands among East Asia's most respected pipe artisans. His creations reveal a keen sensitivity to natural shaping and a meticulous attention to nuance and detail.
Zenn's portfolio hosts a number of Tomato renditions, each distinguished by the artisan's vibrant accent work and differentiated by subtle variations in bowl proportion. This particular example, for instance, features a fuller, more Ball-like bowl, its considerable breadth oriented forward at a gentle cant. The bowl's forward-urging posture is balanced by a trim, gently upturned shank extended by a dark ferrule of vibrant horn. The horn flares outward — its expansion echoing that of the bowl — before terminating in a crisp accent of bright boxwood that offsets the aft's otherwise dark palette. A crisp sandblast completes the ensemble, lending texture and depth to the stummel's grain.
