About This Pipe

Austrian artisan Christian Ruetz initially forged his way into pipe making through sheer trial and error, carving at his living room table and drawing from the hands-on experience he gained from working as a maintenance technician. These days, Ruetz carves from a full-fledged workshop, and he has honed a style deeply rooted in nature. The artisan also cites Dirk Heinemann, Chris Asteriou, and Micah "Yeti" Cryder as formative influences on his work, as well as fellow Austrian artisan Peter Matzhold, who offered his tutelage to the burgeoning carver.

Ruetz's deep appreciation for nature is showcased in every pipe he carves, and this "Broken" Godfather is no exception. This piece exudes organicism with its soft, gentle curves, subtle asymmetry, and earthy, rustic sandblast. There's also no shortage of dynamism within the composition, with the bowl taking on a lenticular shape when viewed from above, yet taking on a plump, forward-canted, almost Egg-like shape in profile. The smooth slip of briar comprising the concave rim adds a touch of contrast to the stummel's sandblast, as does the jagged plateau that decorates this pipe's "broken" shank. While it's easy to infer how this pipe got its "Broken" nomenclature, the "Godfather" part is less straightforward, but wholesome nonetheless: an homage to the artisans who aided Ruetz in his pipe-making journey. Every bit as meaningful as it is beautiful, this offering will make an inimitable addition to any pipe collection.
