Sandblasted Stack Tobacco Pipe

Dirk Heinemann's path to pipe making was shaped by equal parts craftsmanship and curiosity. A trained carpenter with a degree in product design from the University of Hannover, Heinemann spent years refining his skills as a furniture designer before turning his attention to pipes. Though he modestly describes his style as simple, clear, and uncomplicated, his pieces often push boundaries, blending clean lines with bold, avant-garde touches.

A fusion of the Poker and Stack shapes, though ultimately classified as a Stack, this piece from Dirk is a captivating study in proportion and balance. The bowl rises tall, offering just under two inches of chamber depth, while the flat heel allows the pipe to sit upright on its own without the need for a stand — a feature that further evokes the classic Poker form. Surprisingly, despite its substantial briar presence, the pipe remains remarkably compact, measuring under five inches in overall length.

At first glance, the design may appear traditional, but Dirk adds his own distinctive flair by subtly canting the bowl askew, giving the shape a dynamic and unexpected character. Finished in a deep, dark sandblast, this piece showcases striking grain throughout, with the textured surface lending the briar an organic, bark-like appearance. The result is a compact yet commanding Stack that highlights Heinemann's ability to balance classic inspiration with modern design sensibilities.
