About This Pipe
Italian artisan Davide Iafisco combines his previous experience working as a furniture designer with a variety of stylistic influences rooted in his training under the likes of Teddy Knudsen, Claudio Cavicchi, Jeff Gracik, and Adam Davidson. This variety of experience makes for truly unique and evocative pieces such as this Tomato.
The bowl's walls angle forward in such a manner to evoke the appearance of an Egg, and its broad, uplifted heel provides a large canvas for a swath of pumice-like birdseye. Cradled within the bowl's walls is a modest chamber. Out back, a brief shank emerges from a wide transition to join with the two-knuckled rod of bamboo. The saddle stem's sloping base mimics the organic asymmetry of the bamboo's two knuckles, making it a thoughtful addition to the shape. This stem's slope also contributes to the pipe's forward flow by echoing the direction and angle of the bowl's cant.
I really love the look of this pipe, especially when viewed from above. It has a simple, yet elegant, color palette comprised of the inky black stem, the stummel's smoky sandblast, the creamy hues of the bamboo, and the smooth, glossy, chestnut finish dressing the beveled rim. The addition of the smooth finish and contrasting stain to the rim provide a sense of balance to the color palette that'll be satisfying to enjoy during a smoke break.
