About This Pipe

Based in Tianjin, China, Lan Zhenjun is a gifted artisan pipe maker whose background in graphic design lends a refined sensibility to his craft. His strong sense of form and balance translates seamlessly into pipe making, a discipline he embraced after being introduced to it through fellow craftsmen. What began as curiosity soon became a full-time pursuit, as Lan immersed himself in the methods of Chinese pipe making while honing his own artistic voice. His style draws clear inspiration from the Danish school, evident in his preference for fluid, organic silhouettes and confident, well-defined proportions.

This bent Apple is a striking example of Lan's sculptural approach. The design centers around a broad, rounded bowl that sits prominently at the fore of an upturned shank and heavily arched saddle stem. The bowl rests on a lifted heel and subtly narrows toward the rim, all while canting slightly forward to create a sense of motion. From the low-set transition, the shank and stem sweep upward in a flowing S-curve, culminating in a vulcanite saddle whose shoulder aligns perfectly with the bowl's height—creating a sense of harmony across the composition. The bowl's well-contoured, insulating walls fit naturally in the hand, expanding gently along the flanks into a generous waistline. A deep, dark sandblast finish accentuates the briar's natural grain, revealing undulating growth rings that ripple across the surface with rich texture.
