Sandblasted Freehand Jatobá Tobacco Pipe

Gustavo Cunha, the Brazilian artisan behind MarTelo, is deeply fascinated by both pipes and nature. Inspired by the architecture of his hometown, Diamantina, Gustavo developed an interest in woodworking at an early age, which eventually led him to earn a degree in design. Now a renowned artisan, MarTelo combines his knowledge of woodworking and furniture design to create a diverse portfolio that includes everything from traditional pipe designs to organic Freehands. MarTelo's mission is to preserve the tradition of pipe smoking by crafting unique pipes with soul — living pieces that bring joy to his clients and friends.

The Jatobá is one of MarTelo's signature shapes, interpreted in various ways across Cunha's portfolio. Its defining feature is a tall, slender bowl that evokes the fruit of the jatobá tree from which it takes its name. This particular Freehand rendition carries a bit more muscularity than its predecessors, with extra substance through the bowl and a shank rendered with two ridgelines along its lower section, creating a lenticular look in profile. The bowl stands tall in profile, measuring over two inches in height, before taking a rearward curve into the transition. The stummel is finished in a dark sandblast, highlighting stacked growth rings that climb the bowl's flanks and continue through the shank. The combination of its substantial proportions and organic shaping gives this Jatobá a strong, sculptural presence while retaining the distinctive character of marTelo's design.
