About This Pipe

A trained carpenter and long-time pipe smoker, Dirk Heinemann uses his background in furniture design and carpentry to craft smoking instruments that are just as beautiful in their engineering as they are in appearance. The artisan describes his style as simple, clear, and uncomplicated, yet his portfolio is filled with sculptural, avant-garde shapes such as this offering. This goes to show that Heinemann's years of expertise and keen knack for shaping allow him to pull off impressive feats of carving with effortless panache.

This Fugu is quite the unique iteration of the iconic shape, with a low-profile silhouette and striking combination of briar and morta. The bowl is framed by the flowing ridgelines characteristic of the traditional Fugu, yet it sits unconventionally low in the composition, its fore swelling forward dramatically. The shank is equally nuanced, exhibiting the teardrop shaping associated with the Fugu, but rotated 90 degrees, so the main ridgeline rests atop the shank. Said shank is made of morta, whose muted gray hue and distinctive texture establishes a striking contrast against the rich ruby sandblast of the bowl and transition. For additional contrast, the lenticular shaped rim remains smooth, wearing a light auburn stain, and the bowl's right flank showcases a pop of craggy plateau. A vulcanite stem with an expansion ring and a dramatically flared fishtail stem completes the piece, adding further intrigue to the silhouette. With such dynamic shaping and a rich assortment of tones and textures within the composition, this distinctive Fugu would make an inimitable addition to any smoker's collection.
