About This Pipe

A take on Todd Johnson's "Cup and Ball" shape, which evoked the appearance of an old children's toy, this piece by Jared Coles makes for a long, lithe shape that remains quite comfortable in hand. With a plump, Tomato-like bowl backed by a crisp, teardrop ridge around the transition, which comes to a clean point just at the base of the bowl. Just as impressive is the sandblast, which offers plenty of texture, while offering just a hint of craggy plateau at the bowl's left flank for extra density. Add to that a red-hued contrast stain, which offers some depth to the visual presentation, as well as a stem of amber-colored Bakelite, and this is a handsome, classically-inclined piece with plenty of modern charm.
