About This Pipe

After years of touring with his Grammy-nominated band, Davis found pipe making as a second creative outlet, one rooted in artistic expression. Davis had some experience in workshops working as a luthier, which, for our non-musically inclined readers, is a maker of stringed instruments. Davis's vast portfolio, ranging from classic shapes to fluid Freehands, is indicative of his desire to continually evolve as an artisan, as expressed in this quote on his website: "I never want to be complacent as a pipe maker. I believe I will always be working to become better, and I think it shows in my work over the years."

This Lovat is an excellent example of Davis's distinctive style, showcasing the compact muscularity often associated with American pipe making while measuring just under five inches in total length. The bowl carries a subtle plumpness, with a pronounced heel that begins a gentle but noticeable taper toward the rim. The shank complements the bowl's robust form, its extended length reinforcing the proud, muscular profile. In keeping with the traditional Lovat shape, a concise saddle stem of black vulcanite completes the design.

The stummel is finished in a deep black sandblast that highlights undulating growth rings around the bowl. At the junction, a thick accent of spalted tamarind introduces its own striking grain patterns while adding a touch of warmth to the otherwise dark, moody palette.
