About This Pipe

Kai Nielsen, the son of Viggo Nielsen, who founded the Bari pipe factory, entered the world of pipe making in his teen years when he began working part-time at his father's factory. At the age of 21, he became a full-time employee — but that was just the beginning. Today, after years spent mastering his craft, he's a respected artisan with an impressive portfolio full of refined, classically Danish pieces. Showcasing exceptional grain and shaping, this Rhodesian has earned Nielsen's Jewel of Denmark grade at the "A" level, cementing its status among the upper echelons of the artisan's work. When looking at the exemplary grain, finish, and shaping on this piece, it's easy to understand how it earned such a prestigious grade.

This Rhodesian is well-balanced in proportion, featuring a moderately sized bowl paired to a succinct shank-and-stem arrangement replete with graceful, subtle curves. The bowl is quite trim, and its traditionally high waist is demarcated by a crisp pair of beadlines. Underscored by a sweeping, graceful curve, the shank displays just a touch of rigidity on the paneled underside, while the top horizon remains characteristically round for Rhodesian, making for a distinctive take on the classic shape. Gorgeous flame grain climbs the walls of the bowl, stopping at the beadline-adorned waist, where tight curlicues of birdseye take over. A rich, smooth, mahogany finish dresses the stummel, highlighting the beautiful grain and imbuing the piece with an overall sense of timeless elegance.
