About This Pipe
Born in Japan and now living in Germany, Ken'ichiro Dederichs-Uchida, commonly referred to as Ken Dederichs, creates pipes that blend traditional craftsmanship and Japanese design language, resulting in bold, often organic compositions with a unique aesthetic. Originally developed by renowned Swedish pipe maker Bo Nordh, the Shield is a shape designed to make the most of a briar block's natural grain. Dederichs embraces that sculptural concept in this striking interpretation, using a pronounced heel, a curved fore wall, and a ridgedline-wrapped midsection that creates a dynamic, architectural profile. The trim shank provides a sleek counterpoint to the bowl's bold contours, extending through three knuckles of bright bamboo before meeting an upturned saddle stem. The bamboo brings bright warmth to the otherwise dark composition, while a deep mahogany stain accentuates the briar's flowing grain. Particularly striking birdseye grain emerges across the broad fore wall, lending further visual interest to this highly artistic shape.
